Friday Book Recommendation: Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome was a childhood favorite. Written in the 1930's it's a timeless tale of adventure that follows a group of English children who set off on their own to explore the waters of the Lake District. They encounter storms, pirates, and of course, treasure, while sailing their namesake boats the Swallow, and the Amazon.

I grew up learning to sail on Narragansett Bay in wooden Herreshoff 12 1/2s made around the same time Swallows and Amazons was published, and the book was a constant source or inspiration for adventures in the bay. Whether searching for treasure on Hog Island or watching for pirates in Bristol Harbor. These days it's a wonderful reminder of a simpler time and I would highly recommend it to anyone who's looking to rekindle their childhood sense of adventure.

These days I still get out on Narragansett Bay every Wednesday night in the summer for racing at Bristol Yacht Club.
