There is a lot of speculation and misinformation about how much water a data center uses. Let’s set the record straight.

Our initial plans for our Big Sky Campus use water for domestic purposes only, like restrooms and kitchens, and not for cooling. In fact, many modern data centers use cutting-edge technology, like closed-loop cooling systems, to significantly reduce or eliminate the need for water in cooling.

We’re committed to protecting our Montana way of life, including being good stewards of our land and resources.

In Montana, the rules are clear. According to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality’s Data Centers in Montana FAQ, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation oversees water rights, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for water quality, air quality, and the environmental review process under the Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA), and the Montana Public Service Commission regulates power and electric rates.

Big Sky Digital Infrastructure operates under all of these agencies. When we talk about water, air, environmental impacts, or power costs, there are specific regulators on the job.

Quantica just announced the company has filed interconnection applications to expand power generation to support Big Sky Digital Infrastructure's 1,100 MW Campus in Yellowstone County.

Below are statements from Quantica's CFO, Charlie Baker and CEO, John Chesser:

“Quantica will pay for the additional power capacity for the Big Sky Digital Infrastructure Campus in Montana. NorthWestern Energy’s ratepayers will not be responsible for the cost of the power. As a Billings resident, I appreciate this approach and it’s important to me that my neighbors don’t foot the bill for our project,” says Charlie Baker, Chief Accounting Officer of Quantica Infrastructure. “Developed by Montanans and grounded in local priorities, this project is designed to advance statewide economic opportunity while responsibly safeguarding communities and minimizing negative impacts to Montana’s citizens.”

“Data center companies are looking for places that can deliver power, connectivity, and building capacity at scale. By investing in additional capacity now, we plan to address what we’re seeing in terms of power demand from data center companies. This expansion significantly increases our total investment in Montana, and the additional power capacity would result in even more economic opportunity, construction jobs over several years, and strengthen the State’s power grid,” says John Chesser, CEO of Quantica Infrastructure.

Quantica's CEO, John Chesser, explained the company’s commitment to pay its own way for power in the following statement:

“I’m proud that our leadership team has strong, deep roots in Montana. We understand and respect the Montana way of life, and we’re committed to protecting it.

“To support BSDI’s Campus, we’re pursuing a resilient, all-of-the-above power portfolio, including renewable and traditional energy resources, battery energy storage, and the evaluation of emerging energy technologies and carbon-reduction solutions. Our balanced approach is designed to deliver reliable power while complementing Montana’s broader energy mix.

“Most importantly, we’re paying our own way for power, without increasing Montanans’ electricity bills for our project. We’ll pay the cost of electricity infrastructure and any new power generation needed to serve our project.

“We’ll continue working with utilities and regulators to ensure the project is responsibly reviewed, permitted, and aligned with the community’s priorities. Our goal is to create good Montana jobs and increased opportunity for Montanans, all while being good stewards of our lands and resources.”

Data centers are not new to Montana. According to a FAQ document from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, private sector and state‑run data centers have operated here for more than a decade. Cryptocurrency mining facilities have been around for over seven years in places like Butte, Hardin, Helena, Miles City, and other communities.

Big Sky Digital Infrastructure is focused on long‑term, community‑minded data center development, working to bring digital infrastructure that fits rural towns and local priorities.

What do emails, social media, online banking, and health records all have in common? They’re all stored in, processed in, and transmitted through a data center.

A data center is a secure building full of computers that store and process data so it’s there when needed. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality explains this in more detail in its Data Centers in Montana FAQ.

Big Sky Digital Infrastructure is working to build that backbone so rural communities and small towns can share in the investment, jobs, and opportunities that come with the digital economy.
