Leaf-off conditions are right around the corner. But what if the project cannot wait for leaf-off? The design team also needs a high-resolution surface model due to pronounced elevation changes down to the water’s edge – all of which is under dense foliage. Heavy (expensive) equipment is standin...

In Episode 1, we discussed how LiDAR serves as a foundational dataset during preliminary engineering and design by providing an accurate surface model of the project area. While LiDAR is exceptionally effective for this purpose, integrating high-resolution imagery adds another critical layer of information that designers and analysts can leverage throughout the project lifecycle.
A geospatially accurate, orthorectified image—with proper color balancing and radiometric corrections—provides a detailed visual representation of the site. This allows analysts to perform precise measurements, identify visible features, and extract assets into dedicated CAD design layers. When paired with a LiDAR-derived DSM, imagery quality can be significantly enhanced by reducing common distortions such as chopped powerlines, mismatches over homogeneous surfaces (water, sand, or pavement), and poor surface modeling in heavily vegetated areas.
High-resolution imagery also enables the extraction of fine feature details that support ALTA Table A item identification, utility locates, and other tasks traditionally assigned to field crews. By shifting portions of this work into the office, project teams can reduce field time, improve efficiency, and limit personnel exposure to hazardous traffic environments.
We could spend much more time exploring the value of multispectral imagery, NDVI analysis, and other integrated geospatial products. The larger takeaway, however, is that every dataset brings unique strengths to the table, and the greatest value is often realized when multiple data sources are combined into a comprehensive package.
That said, practical considerations still matter. Not every project requires the most advanced technology available, and factors such as project scale, budget, and deliverable requirements should always guide the approach. Fortunately, today's geospatial toolbox offers more options than ever before. The key is partnering with a team that remains focused on the end goal: delivering accurate, actionable data that supports better decisions.

Hello friends! We've been working a lot of 'routine' UAS projects lately, but I began to realize that each project is never truly 'routine'. What does 'routine' look like anyway?

Episode 1: Let's take a 20,000ft view (6,096m 😎) of a typical LiDAR & Imagery project supporting initial design & engineering efforts of a ~15 acre site - we'll focus on the 3D aspect in Episode 1.

#1: Raw colorized LiDAR point cloud to kick things off...visually pleasing, worthless for design purposes
#2: Classification of all LiDAR points to distinguish what's what - allows us to branch off for different modeling types (surface, buildings, vegetation, powerlines, etc)
#3: Bare Earth point cloud - foundation of true surface generation going forward
#4: DEM - Digital Elevation Model of the design surface (no vegetation, buildings, or other features to skew the actual surface)

Now we have a surface to generate our breaklines, contours, spot elevations, TINs, hillshades, etc. This is where the rubber meets the road for our derivative products that include elevation values. Again, this is a high-level 'Idiot's Guide' to the process...we won't mention the vehicle trajectory processing, sensor calibration, strip alignments, control adjustments, re-projections, cloud editing, ad infinitum required to get to this point. This is what produces the "wheat from the chaff" if you will... 😉

Stay tuned for Episode 2: 2D orthoimagery data integration!

All project requirements aren't created equal; acquisition methods & processing should match those requirements. This aids Project Managers & planners to scale & manage the project within the Big-3 (Cost-Schedule-Technical). From large area topos to street-level utility locates - we're your go-to partner!
