Cold snap + snow ❄️❄️
If you have a heat pump or high-efficiency furnace, please take a minute to read this.

HEAT PUMPS – ALL-ELECTRIC HOMES
1. Outdoor unit running constantly
During very cold weather, it is normal for your outdoor heat pump to run almost nonstop. This does not mean something is wrong.
2. Check snow and ice around the outdoor unit
Make sure snow is not higher than the bottom of the unit.
If it is, shovel around it all the way down to the ground.

Why this matters:
• The unit goes into defrost and needs to drain water
• Ice is supposed to freeze under the unit, not inside it
• Ice buildup inside the unit can cause damage
3. Thermostat settings
Leave your thermostat in normal heating mode.
Only switch to Emergency Heat if the indoor temperature cannot stay within 2°F of the set temperature.

Emergency Heat on all-electric systems is much more expensive to run and should only be used when necessary.

If your system was installed and configured correctly, it should hold temperature even in cold weather.

HIGH-EFFICIENCY FURNACES – VERY IMPORTANT

After heavy snow, check your PVC intake and exhaust pipes outside.

• Make sure they are not buried
• Make sure they are not iced over
• Clear snow and ice around them

Blocked vents can cause:
• Furnace shutdown
• Error codes
• No heat
• Unsafe operation in extreme cases

High-efficiency furnaces need proper airflow to operate safely.

Take 2 minutes today:
✔ Clear snow and ice
✔ Make sure there is open space around the pipes

If you have questions about running your system in cold weather, call us (203)546-7776
We’re happy to help.

Stay warm and stay safe. ❄️🔥
