Finding a machine shop that can handle a 15,000-pound casting is one thing. Finding one with the floor space, lifting capacity, fixturing capability, and process controls to machine it accurately is a different problem entirely.

A lot of procurement teams learn this the hard way after a part gets quoted and then bounced back because the shop can't actually run it. Trace-A-Matic operates 140+ precision machining centers across 300,000+ square feet of climate-controlled space in Brookfield, WI and Houston, TX (traceamatic.com), specifically built around parts that exceed what most job shops can physically accommodate.

ISO 9001:2015 certification and in-house CMM inspection mean the size of the part does not change the quality expectations. Large does not have to mean loosely toleranced.

What has been your biggest challenge getting a high-mass or oversized part sourced to print?

🍦 A pretty sweet way to break up the workday.

Sweet Abilities stopped by Trace-A-Matic recently, giving our team a chance to step outside, cool off and enjoy some locally made ice cream treats.

The treats were great, but the mission behind them makes the visit even better. Sweet Abilities provides fulfilling and accommodating work opportunities that give people of all abilities a chance to shine.

Thanks to the Sweet Abilities team for stopping by — and to our employees for everything they do to keep Trace-A-Matic moving every day.

Sometimes a good day at work just needs a little ice cream. 🍨

Most machine shops have a practical ceiling on part size. It shows up quietly in a quote process. You send an RFQ for a large weldment or forging, and either the response comes back vague on fixturing or it just never comes back at all. For procurement teams sourcing parts that push 10,000 to 15,000 pounds, that ceiling is a real problem.

Trace-A-Matic (traceamatic.com) machines parts up to 15,000 pounds across 140+ precision machining centers in 300,000+ square feet of climate-controlled space in Brookfield, WI and Houston, TX. The facilities are built around large, complex work. That is a different starting point than a general job shop that occasionally takes an oversized part as an exception.

ISO 9001:2015 certification covers the full process, not just final inspection. For parts in aerospace, defense, or power generation, that matters.

What size or complexity threshold have you found most shops quietly step back from?

Finding a machine shop that can actually handle a 15,000-pound workpiece is harder than it sounds. Most shops will quote it, then call you three weeks in to say their equipment cannot hold the part or their floor loading is insufficient. That wastes time nobody has.

Trace-A-Matic (traceamatic.com) runs 140+ precision machining centers across 300,000+ sq ft of climate-controlled space in Brookfield, WI and Houston, TX, purpose-built to handle castings, forgings, and weldments at the heavy end of the scale. The climate-controlled environment matters more than people realize for large parts. Thermal variation across a 10-foot workpiece can introduce dimensional error that no amount of inspection will fix after the fact.

Parts at this size and weight also tend to arrive with more complex fixturing requirements. That is where pre-job CNC engineering work pays off before the first cut is ever made.

Most machine shops will quote a large part and then quietly back out once they see the actual dimensions and weight. It is a real problem for procurement teams sourcing components that push the limits of what standard equipment can handle.

Trace-A-Matic (traceamatic.com) runs 140+ precision machining centers across 300,000+ sq ft of climate-controlled space in Brookfield, WI and Houston, TX, and regularly machines parts from castings, forgings, and weldments weighing up to 15,000 pounds. That is not a theoretical ceiling. It reflects the actual equipment, fixturing, and floor capacity built into both facilities.

For procurement teams, the practical issue is not just finding a shop that owns large machines. It is finding one where large parts are a routine part of the workflow, not an exception that creates scheduling and quality risk.

What has been the hardest part of qualifying a supplier for an oversized or unusually heavy component?
