Cyanide antidotes are either limited in efficacy for smoke inhalation victims (i.e., sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate) or are very expensive (i.e., hydroxocobalamin), and each cyanide antidote currently available must be administered via IV by trained personnel.

Currently, there is no diagnostic for cyanide exposure from smoke inhalation or other suspected exposure routes. Additionally, methods for confirmation of cyanide exposure are forensic in nature and can take up to 24 hours. Note that the device pictured in this post is a laboratory prototype for a cyanide diagnostic for cyanide exposure developed by Drs. Jackson and Logue, the Co-founders of ADS, LLC.

Death from cyanide exposure can occur in 5 to 30 minutes, depending upon the level of exposure and only the administration of a cyanide antidote, like hydroxocobalamin, will displace cyanide from cytochrome c oxidase to restore proper cellular function.
