At Kaplan, our self-perform team routinely steps in to execute specialty and side scope work alongside major project responsibilities. It’s a reflection of flexibility, quality control, and added value for our clients. At the Stein Campus at Schechter Boston, our team self-performed the removal and replacement of classroom cubbies on the 2nd floor during a short holiday shutdown window. The new wooden cubbies were prefabricated in advance, allowing us to move quickly during Passover break to remove the existing metal lockers and install the new millwork. This approach kept the project on schedule and saved our client six figures in construction costs.

It’s officially our 50th birthday! 🎉

Founded by Ken and Cathy Kaplan, Kaplan Construction began with a table saw, a used filing cabinet, and its first project completed in partnership with a local cheese shop, where part of the payment quite literally came in the form of cheese.

In the decades that followed, we grew alongside Boston’s revitalization, building a reputation for strong client relationships and a progressive, flexible approach to construction. Early projects like the Henderson Carriage Building in Cambridge and the Exeter Street Theatre in Boston helped define our expertise in historic rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, and complex interior fitups. As the years went by, we expanded into commercial, institutional, academic, worship, healthcare, and recreational sectors – just about every market along the way.

Our philosophy has stayed the same since 1976: invest in our people, stand behind our work, and keep clients happy. That approach continues today under the leadership of Jane Kaplan Peck and Nathan Peck, carrying forward the next generation of our family-built company.

Not the typical perspective you see from the jobsite 👀

At the future site of Chabad at Chestnut Hill, progress is moving steadily forward. The mikvah foundation walls and waterproofing are nearing completion, with hoses actively pumping water from the area, while basement footings are in place and walls are being prepped for concrete. Bulk excavation continues across the site for the remaining foundations.

The new Chabad will provide a lasting home for the community, with space for learning, celebration, gathering, and the continued growth of Jewish life in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

As part of our 50th year, we’re reflecting on projects that shaped our history, including the Unitarian Universalist Area Church in Sherborn, Mass.

In 2010, Kaplan was selected for two phases of construction at the meetinghouse. The first focused on making the building fully accessible, along with upgrades to emergency lighting and exit signage. The second phase added a multi-purpose addition to support the church’s growing religious education programs and community activities.

Our team aligned the construction schedule with the congregation’s fundraising efforts and carefully phased the work to minimize disruption. This included creating a temporary entry and relocating the daycare playground during site improvements.

The project received the William D. Smith Memorial Award for the best Accessible Design from the Boston Society for Architecture and the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board.

Construction is underway on the final phases at Sportsmen's Tennis & Enrichment Center in Dorchester! Building on the successful completion of phases 1 and 2, phases 3 and 4 will add a new connector building, outdoor courts, new welcome center, teaching kitchen, additional office space, and exhibits honoring Black tennis history and Billie Jean King. All work will be completed within an active facility, keeping the center open for the community.
