After a hurricane damages your home, it's important to act quickly and carefully. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do:

# # # 1. **Ensure Safety**
- **Check for immediate dangers**: Look for structural damage, gas leaks, downed power lines, or flooding. Evacuate if necessary.
- **Turn off utilities**: If it’s safe, turn off electricity, gas, and water to avoid further damage or hazards like fire or electrocution.

# # # 2. **Document the Damage**
- **Take photos and videos**: Capture all the damage inside and outside your home, including furniture, belongings, and structural damage. This will be crucial for insurance claims.
- **Make a list of damaged items**: Write down all damaged belongings and their approximate value. The more detailed your documentation, the better for insurance purposes.

# # # 3. **Contact Your Insurance Company**
- **Report the damage**: Call your homeowner’s insurance company immediately to start the claims process. Provide them with the documentation you gathered.
- **Ask about temporary repairs**: Your insurer might want you to make temporary repairs to prevent further damage. Clarify what’s covered before proceeding.

# # # 4. **Make Temporary Repairs**
- **Prevent further damage**: If safe, cover broken windows, roof damage, or leaks with tarps or plywood to prevent additional harm from rain or debris.
- **Keep receipts**: Save receipts for all materials used for temporary repairs, as they may be reimbursable by your insurance.

# # # 5. **Hire Professionals for Major Repairs**
- **Call a reputable contractor**: Choose a licensed and insured contractor to assess and repair the damage. Be cautious of fraud or scams in the aftermath of a disaster.
- **Check with your insurance**: Make sure that repairs align with your insurance coverage before starting any major work.

# # # 6. **Seek Financial Assistance**
- **FEMA Assistance**: If the hurricane is a declared disaster, you may qualify for assistance through FEMA or other disaster recovery programs.
- **Local resources**: Many local charities and government organizations offer grants or low-interest loans for home repairs following a hurricane.

# # # 7. **Clean Up Safely**
- **Wear protective gear**: Use gloves, masks, and boots when cleaning up debris to protect yourself from mold, sharp objects, or hazardous materials.
- **Beware of mold**: If water damage occurred, mold can grow quickly. Consider hiring a professional for mold removal.

# # # 8. **Consider Long-Term Repairs and Prevention**
- **Rebuild stronger**: When rebuilding, consider hurricane-resistant materials and upgrades, such as impact-resistant windows or stronger roofing, to protect against future storms.
- **Review your insurance**: After repairs, review your insurance coverage to make sure you're adequately protected for the future.

If you're with **Just In Time Roofing and Construction**, your company could offer professional help with these repairs, ensuring everything is done safely and to code.

When I got out of the Millertary I was kind of in limbo of what I wanted to do. I took a sales position and it was with a roofing company and we went door to door selling inspections and helping people with claims.

When I seen how the insurance companies were treating people, I was appalled. People are nothing but numbers to a lot of these carriers and the insured have almost no help to hold them accountable.

Fast forward almost 10 years later and I have fought in the trenches against this corrupt carriers. Honestly, I love helping people not only fight but win, and win big, and would love to help anyone who needs me.

If you’re going to go to war isn’t it a good idea to go to war with a combat veteran who has experience?

Well if you’re going to go to war against your insurance company (aka filing a claim) you want an experience veteran on your side who has the result’s.

3 layers of felt on roof.

That means the last two contractors left the decking alone instead of addressing the obvious issues.

I wish it wasn’t common but it is. Lazy roofers, and even sometimes cheap owners, cutting corners.

By leaving the felt on you not only ignore any decking concerns, you may also compromise the warranty.

Don’t do it.

My friend called me about a house he bought and in the inspection report (pic below) they highlighted some areas that needed “tuned up.”

One of the questions I ask people about their roofs during my canvassing/inspecting is “Who does your maintenance?”

As much as we wish you could enjoy the roof for the life of it and not worry about anything, that just isn’t true.

Roofs require maintenance. There are exposed fasteners that are caulked when installed to protect from water intrusion.

Well what happens to caulk over the years? It dries out and cracks. A tune up is simply hitting it with a fresh layer of new caulk.

Also, nail pops cause shingles to stick up and get caught in the wind. Simply removing that nail will save you from costly repairs/replacements.

Maintenance prolongs the roof of your life, protects you from costly repairs down the road, prevents leaks, is cost effective.

A typical tune up should cost anywhere between $200-500 dollars and should typically only need to be done around the 7-10 year range and about every 3-5 years after that.

I also recommend it prior to selling houses in order to be proactive about potential problems.
