As you enjoy cooler weather, football games, bonfires and all things fall, don’t forget to keep electrical safety on your checklist.

• Keep cords and electrical equipment away from water and wet leaves

• Never overload outlets or extension cords

• Check outdoor lighting and cords for damage before using them

• Keep flammable materials away from electrical equipment and heat sources

• Stay away from downed power lines and always assume they are energized

Enjoy everything fall has to offer, and remember: Safety is always in season.

What a great day giving back to our community!

Today, a few of our employees spent our annual Community Day at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop in North Vernon, helping with painting, cleaning and other projects.

Community Day is a great way to put Cooperative Principle #7, Concern for Community, into action. We’re proud to give back to the communities we serve and lend a hand to organizations doing great work.

Jackson County REMC offers Security Light service for homes, farms and rural businesses.

Our security lights:

• Automatically turn on at dusk and off at dawn
• Can provide lighting for your driveway, yard, farm or business
• Are available in standard and directional options
• Are installed on eligible REMC poles
• Are furnished, owned and maintained by Jackson County REMC

It’s an easy way to add more visibility around your property without having to purchase and maintain the light yourself.

Before you plug in those lights and outdoor decorations, take a few minutes to check your setup:

• Use extension cords specifically rated for outdoor use.

• Inspect cords and lights for cracks, fraying or exposed wires before using them.

• Plug outdoor decorations into GFCI-protected outlets.

• Keep electrical connections and cords away from standing water and wet leaves.

• Don't overload outlets, extension cords or power strips.

• Keep cords positioned where they won't become a trip hazard.

• If you're using a ladder, look up first and keep yourself and equipment at least 10 feet from overhead power lines.

And remember: extension cords are meant for temporary use, not as a permanent wiring solution.

Take a few extra minutes now to make sure your fall decorations are festive and safe.
