Brownwood Municipal Development District: A Decade of Transformational Progress (2016-2026)

In May 2016, the citizens of Brownwood made a transformational investment in the community’s future by approving the conversion of the City’s economic development organization to the Brownwood Municipal Development District (BMDD). This strategic decision expanded the community’s
ability to invest not only in industrial recruitment and job creation, but also in the broader quality-of-life infrastructure that supports long-term economic vitality. Over the past ten years, the BMDD has played a
central role in advancing Brownwood’s growth through targeted investments in housing, retail
development, downtown revitalization, industrial expansion, and community amenities. These efforts have strengthened the local economy, enhanced the resident experience, and positioned Brownwood as a
regional hub for opportunity and investment.

Brownwood’s story has always been connected to the rail.

The railroad helped shape our downtown, supported commerce, and position Brownwood as a regional hub for trade, travel, and growth. That history remains part of our identity today as we continue investing in downtown, tourism, small business, and quality-of-life improvements that build on the foundation laid generations ago.

In Brownwood, you can dine in an old passenger train car or buy some books in a repurposed movie theater.
