WTF WEDNESDAY, What The Fact?! 🤯
The tower that leans further than Pisa, because the wood under it rotted.
The Leaning Tower of Suurhusen is a brick steeple in East Frisia, Germany, built around 1450 on oak piles in soft, waterlogged ground. It stands about 5.19 degrees off vertical; Pisa sits at roughly 4 degrees. In 2007, Guinness confirmed Suurhusen as the world’s most unintentionally tilted tower.
The oak piles stayed sound while underwater. In the 19th century, regional drainage lowered the groundwater, exposed the wood to air, and allowed it to decay. The failing foundation tipped the tower. Closed in 1975, it was stabilized and reopened in 1985-by addressing drainage and the foundation, not just patching brickwork.
Built-environment lesson: structural problems upstairs can start low and wet. Rotting supports, changing groundwater, poor drainage, or shrinking soil can show up as cracks. An independent inspection evaluates the property as a connected system, and helps explain why conditions matter.
