Today was the annual Bison Days parade! Organized by Mariel Wolsing, it's always a great way for Oak & Anvil Works to engage with our amazing community.

No parade is complete without slinging swag, so this year we added a Candy Cannon we built for the occasion. With a little compressed air, and a wad of paper towels, this beauty hurled a handful of smarties a respectable 30', or so. (Not too shabby for a last-minute build!)

My three eager gunners operated it like seasoned veterans. đŸ˜†

Sometimes, inspiration is found in the restfulness of a crackling fire and a nice rye.

Yeah... I'm not in my workshop tonight, even though I have so SO much to do. On occasion, the system needs a reset; to slow down and take stock, and dream up new ideas. Or maybe just prioritize the ideas I've already had.

There's just something about the crackle of a fire, the rustling of cottonwood leaves, and the timid rhythmic chirping of crickets to help me climb out of the daily mundane.

Tomorrow I'll be back at it, wearing all the hats and tied in knots. But for now it's just me, the wind, crickets, and my thoughts.

I just wrapped up some minor repairs and enhancements to this 76 year old piece. Originally built in 1955 from solid black walnut, this ingenious design features a folding table top that hingings in the middle, then swivels, to create a small console.

After 76 years of use and further drying, the wood had warped subtly, imparting an undesired wobble.

The first step was to counter the wobble at the source: the floor. I carefully drilled insets in its four feet and installed discreet screw-levelers. Now, with the turn of a wrench, the wobble is gone.

To further steady the surface, I fabricated four decorative steel gussets of the same style used elsewhere in my patron's store, where this piece lives. These reinforce the two wood screws that solely supported the uprights previously.

Finally, I reinvigorated the the finish. Three quarters of a century of wear and tear had left their mark. I carefully applied walnut finish restorer making its color pop once more and giving it back the luster it had when it came from its maker's workshop.

Working on these sorts of pieces is always a singular honor. Perhaps I'm a romantic soul, but becoming a part of a piece's history, its silent story, its chain of craftsmen, makes me glad to think my work may continue to echo down the years, and bring a measure of joy to those whose homes it comes to grace.

Today's workshop shenanigans found the boys and I creating my bride's Mother's Day gift - a custom crafted, squirrel confounding, wind defying bird feeder pole. It replaced a chintzy thirty-dollar wonder that couldn't withstand the weight of a single feeder without considerable reinforcement. I think it's safe to say it made her day (which in turn, made mine).

This beauty is deceptive in its scale. Exceeding 10' in height, 4 delicately curved arms extend 30" from the 2"x2" post. Adorning the top is a 12" hand forged basket twist topped with a fleur-de-lis. Feeders can be filled by loosing the paracord from its cleat to lower the intended feeder into easy reach.

The post is mounted by sliding its base into a receiver tube that is welded to 1/2" rebar stakes that pierce the earth to a depth of 30". The entire post can be lifted out of the receiver tube for storage, if desired.

This is the post you hope to find at the local big box store, only to walk away with a flimsy undersized shepherds crook you know isn't worth the money you paid for it. This is why small business matters: we can make your vision come to life. Yes, the price will be higher; but if you care about quality with a touch of artistry and craftsmanship, you will not be disappointed.

Since the first set went over so well, I've been commissioned to create two more sets of art nouveau inspired handrails for a local business. I used similar design elements as the first, much larger set, to tie everything together. This pair will mount to either side of a wall to help folks navigate a step.
