Today is World Keratoconus Day, an opportunity to raise awareness for a common condition with huge impacts to vision, quality of life, and emotional well-being.

Historically, prevalence has been reported as 1 in 2000 patients. With advances in diagnostics and increased screening, we now know keratoconus affects far more people.

Awareness, early detection, and innovation can make a real difference for those living with keratoconus. At Epion, we’re proud to be part of the growing effort to better understand and treat keratoconus.

🔗 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴?
Corneal cross-linking uses vitamin B2 (also known as riboflavin) and ultraviolet light to form new bonds between collagen molecules in the eye, helping to stiffen the cornea. Although epithelium-off cross-linking is effective, the current approach involves removing the cornea’s epithelium to allow riboflavin to pe*****te. Removing this outer layer can be painful and is associated with a slow recovery and occasional corneal scarring.

💡𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁?
EpiSmart is an investigational epithelium-on cross-linking system for keratoconus in Phase 3 trials. The new approach relies on a modified form of riboflavin which pe*****tes deep into the cornea 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙧𝙪𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙪𝙢. The procedure lasts approximately 50 minutes, including 30 minutes of riboflavin application and 20 minutes of ultraviolet treatment.

🤔 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁?
Since EpiSmart does not require the removal of the corneal outer layer (epithelium), most patients were able to return to normal activities quickly and reported improvements in their visual performance. EpiSmart can be used to treat both eyes in a single session.
