Heart failure can come with a whole new vocabulary.

EF. LVAD. MCS. NYHA.

If you're hearing these terms for the first time, it's completely reasonable to ask what they mean.

Today we're starting with ejection fraction, often shortened to EF.

It's a measurement describing how much blood the left ventricle pumps out with each contraction. It's one of several pieces of information clinicians may use when assessing heart function.

Knowing the language won't answer every question—but it can make conversations with your healthcare team easier to follow.

Why do clinical trials matter?

Before new medical technologies can become widely available, researchers need to understand how they perform in people.

Clinical trials help researchers evaluate things like safety, effectiveness, complications and quality of life.
