Residents may report damage through Indiana 211 by calling (866) 211-9966 or online at on.in.gov/IN-211.
Residents and businesses throughout Porter County who experienced storm-related damage are encouraged to report their damage to Indiana 211, even if the damage is already being addressed or is covered by insurance. Reporting damage helps emergency management officials document the scope and severity of the disaster and can assist in determining whether additional state or federal resources may become available. This reporting is not an application for financial assistance. Note that local officials will continue damage assessments into the coming days.

🚨 LOST YOUR HOME OR HOUSING BECAUSE OF THE NWI STORMS? 🚨

If your home was damaged or destroyed and you don’t have a safe place to live, here is the order we recommend taking action.

You do NOT have to figure everything out at once. Start with Step 1 and work your way down. ❤️

🏠 STEP 1: CONTACT YOUR LANDLORD OR HOME INSURANCE

If you rent:

📞 Contact your landlord/property manager immediately.

Ask:
• Is the home safe and habitable?
• What is the repair timeline?
• Is temporary relocation or housing available?
• What happens with rent while the home is uninhabitable?

Take photos/videos of all damage and keep communication in writing.

If you own your home:

📞 Contact your homeowners insurance company and open a claim immediately.

Ask about Additional Living Expenses (ALE) / Loss of Use coverage and whether your policy can help with temporary lodging while your home is uninhabitable.

❗If you cannot afford your insurance deductible, STILL FILE THE CLAIM. Ask the insurance company when the deductible is due and whether any payment options or other assistance are available.

🏨 STEP 2: CONTACT YOUR TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE

Contact the township trustee for the township where you live.

Explain:

“We lost our home because of the storm and need temporary housing.”

Ask specifically about:

➡️ Emergency hotel/motel vouchers
➡️ Temporary lodging assistance
➡️ Emergency assistance for displaced residents

Some trustees may provide hotel assistance depending on eligibility, circumstances and available funding.

📞 STEP 3: CALL INDIANA 211

Call 211 or 866-211-9966

📱 Or text your ZIP code to 898-211

Tell them:

“Our home was damaged/destroyed in the storm and we need temporary housing.”

Ask specifically about:

• Emergency shelters
• Family shelters
• Coordinated Entry
• Rapid Re-Housing
• Temporary housing
• Local disaster-relief programs
• Community Action Agencies

If you have children, make sure they know you are a family with children who has been displaced.

⛈️ STEP 4: CHECK FEMA

If the storm receives a federal disaster declaration and your area becomes eligible for FEMA assistance, apply as soon as possible.

🌐 DisasterAssistance.gov

📞 1-800-621-3362

FEMA may provide certain disaster-related assistance to eligible households, including temporary housing assistance in qualifying situations.

You can also check for a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center if one is established in your area.

📋 KEEP DOCUMENTATION

Throughout this process, keep:

📸 Photos and videos of damage
📄 Insurance claim information
🧾 Hotel/lodging receipts
🧾 Other disaster-related receipts
🏠 Lease/rental documents
📱 Texts and emails with your landlord or insurance company
📑 Any documentation showing the home is uninhabitable

❤️ DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOUR CURRENT PLACE TO STAY RUNS OUT.

If you’re staying with family or friends right now, that’s a blessing — but use this time to start working through these steps.

1️⃣ Landlord OR homeowners insurance
2️⃣ Township trustee
3️⃣ Indiana 211
4️⃣ FEMA, if your area is declared eligible

And if one resource cannot help, ask them who they recommend contacting next for temporary housing.

NWI families who have lost their homes need to know there are steps they can take and resources they can pursue.

Please SHARE this with anyone affected by the storms. ❤️

Also will be posting assistance posters we come across in threads. Please contribute to the thread if you see something needing added!

Also we have a family in need of a truck , could anyone volunteer time and a truck to help move beds.

You can find more information on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) page and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.
