Equinox Woodworks

Equinox Woodworks A worker-owned cooperative, dedicated to building high-performance, finely-crafted, ecologically sound homes.

We work closely with our clients to build homes that fulfill their dreams, fit within their budget and create a small ecological impact. Equinox Woodworks is a design/build company located in Yancey County, North Carolina with extensive experience in residential construction. We strive to create beautiful homes for our clients while respecting the environment and providing meaningful work for our

craftsmen. We have assembled a skilled team of carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and masons who can work closely together to bring the vision of your dream home into reality. Over the years, we have designed many of the houses we’ve built along with the help of our clients. We draw inspiration from the work of Christopher Alexander’s The Pattern Language, Sarah Susanka’s The Not So Big House, and William McDonough’s Cradle to Cradle. We are also happy to work with other designers or architects to come up with a plan that best suits our clients’ needs. Equinox Woodworks is a proud member of the WNC Green Builders Council and we encourage our clients to build homes that qualify for the NC Healthy Built Homes program. Todd is a licensed NC contractor ( #72944) and carries full worker’s compensation and liability insurance.

Grateful to wrap a grant cycle with@theindustrialcommons' Civic Hub program. We earned BPI building science certifications, became a certified Energy Saver NC contractor, built a crisis response plan, and hosted four community workshops at the Celo Community Center all in a pretty short amount of time.

Highlight: a flood and wildfire preparedness simulation led by ' Kristin Stroup. In a valley still processing Hurricane Helene, it was exactly the right kind of exercise. We left wanting more time with it.

Thank you TIC for the support! This is what rural civic infrastructure looks like.

Getting dried in on one of our newer builds.

This week the crew set the timber frame over the kitchen, installed the tongue-and-groove ceiling, and got the roof dried in before the next round of weather moves through. A good stretch of steady progress.

The timbers are just in the kitchen on this one; a way to bring a little warmth and structure to the heart of the house without going full timber frame throughout.

Now, on to the next phase!

As a part of our community's much-loved "Cabin Fever University," we’ve launched a Happy Hour Workshop Series, where you can snack, drink, and get practical tips to make your home comfier, greener, and more resilient.

Our last workshop with sparked some great conversations and we can't wait to see what transpires at this week's workshop. Come join us for "Energy Smarts for Every Home" with Energy Savers Network this Wednesday, February 11th at 4:30 at the Celo Community Center.

This workshop will focus again on home energy savings, but with a new angle: Energy Savers Network is an incredible organization in Buncombe county whose mission is to empower people and restore the climate by lowering the energy burden of limited-income households in WNC. ESN will explain how homeowners can qualify for real rebates through North Carolina’s HEAR and HOMES programs and you can hear about the amazing work that they do, take tips home about how to improve your energy usage, and sign up to volunteer with them if you feel inclined.

Come hang out, learn something useful, and meet your neighbors. Did we mention the snacks? See you soon,

Y'all. We've been busy! Building a studio for folks near Penland that's ready for insulation, putting in a foundation for a new home here in the South Toe Valley and extending a porch for a home we built years ago. Not to mention *still* finishing up Helene recovery projects in our neighborhood. Phew! Welcoming the rain this week to take a deep breath and recalibrate. How 'bout you?

This past weekend marked the anniversary of Hurricane Helene. For many in our region, it’s a reminder of loss, disruption, and the long road to recovery. Our team chose to spend Friday morning volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Asheville, contributing in a small way to the ongoing work of rebuilding homes and supporting our neighbors. We're a lucky crew to enjoy each others' company and do work that we love. Thanks, for giving us the opportunity!

We’re excited to share that Equinox Woodworks received a Civic Hubs Business Grant from The Industrial Commons, in partnership with Trust for Civic Life!

Since Hurricane Helene, we’ve rethought what a civic hub can be. It’s not just government offices, fire departments or churches; it’s any network that brings people together to share information, coordinate resources, and take collective action. During relief efforts, we helped assess damage, organized labor, and coordinated with neighbors to meet immediate needs. That experience showed us we can expand that role to better serve our region.

This grant will allow us to deepen our role by developing a community services program focused on energy audits and home inspections for underserved residents; creating a crisis response plan to better mobilize labor during floods, wildfires, or other emergencies; and organizing educational events and service projects that bring people together to learn and take action.

Thanks, for the opportunity!

We’re really digging this thermally modified poplar siding. The deep, chocolate tone comes from heat and steam alone, with no chemicals involved. After installation, we treated it with timber oil to bring out the grain and give it extra protection.

Thermal modification makes the wood naturally more resistant to moisture, insects, and decay, and helps it stay stable through seasonal changes. The process also deepens the color, giving it a warmth that pairs beautifully with the metal siding and will weather gracefully over time.

Tell us what you think. Are you into it?
