I am thankful today to be part of the most efficient agricultural system the world has ever seen. In 1920, 27% of the US workforce was farmers. Today it is 2%. Croplife magazine said there were approximately 25,000 retail fertilizer plants in 1983 when Burnt Prairie Fertilizer was started. Now around 18,000 of those have closed. According to the American Farmland Trust, the US loses 2 acres of farmland to development every minute. That is 1,051,200 acres per year. Illinois is one of the top five states in lost acres. By 2050, it is estimated that there will only be 1/3 acre of farmland per person on the earth to produce the food, fiber, energy, and raw materials, that they need. The dedication of farmers allows Americans to spend the lowest percentage of disposable income on food in history. Craig
