Somewhat outside the wheelhouse of our usual operations. We have a client who we have worked for over 20 years. For the past 2 years he had repeatedly asked me to take down this old ash tree that had come to the end of its life. While I initially resisted his request, telling him it would be more cost effective to have someone who specializes in that work to remove the tree, he insisted that he would prefer that I did the job. This year we were onsite doing some maintenance to the slate roof of the main house and the topic of the tree removal came up again. To be completely truthful, I had never really paid too much attention to this particular tree. I have always known it was a big tree, and for years it was in decline. It was one of those things in the landscape that was just "always there". When it became obvious that I would be taking this tree down I started to pay a little more attention to it. Out of curiosity I took a measurement of the trunk at about waist height. At 16 foot 6 inches in circumference numerous online calculators set the age of the tree at 314 years old. I started to think about all the history that tree has seen while standing there on the mouth of the Piscataqua River. While contemplating that history, the task at hand became something more. It became important to me that the end of this tree's "life on the stump" not be the end of it. And while we will cut and split about 3 cord of firewood that will warm us nicely next year, we salvaged a lot of wood that, with some creative sawing will yield some beautiful lumber. We harvested 4, 4-inch-thick slabs, ranging in width between 30 and 40 inches, by 5 feet long. We also salvaged what we could of the major limbs that will yield some nicely figured 4/4 boards of varying widths. We also cut 4 coins 6-inch-thick coins off the stump, the last of which measured just under 6 feet in diameter. That piece and some of the other lumber will become a table that will sit on the Owners porch, once again looking out at the mouth of Piscataqua River. To my client, thank you for the privilege of allowing us to help this old tree move from one life to the next. Every now and then, most times when I least expect it, I am reminded why I love my work.
