Byron Generating Station is a nuclear power plant located near Byron in Northern Illinois, about 110 miles west of Chicago. Byron has 2 units capable of generating approximately 2,347 net megawatts (MW) of electricity. Together the units can produce enough electricity to power more than 2 million average American homes. Its massive twin cooling towers reach 495 feet into the air, overlooking the s

cenic Rock River Valley. The site has two pressurized water reactors designed by Westinghouse. Units 1 and 2 began commercial operation on September 16, 1985, and August 2, 1987, respectively.

Today, Exelon will file Post Shutdown Decommissioning Activity Reports (PSDARs) with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, detailing long-term site restoration plans for the Byron and Dresden nuclear energy facilities. The PSDAR filings are among the final steps in retiring the Byron and Dresden stations.

Without a legislative solution, the Braidwood and LaSalle nuclear facilities face closings that will have exponential economic and environmental impacts. Policymakers continue to work on legislation that would preserve the nuclear plants, which support 28,000 direct and indirect jobs and contribute $3.5 billion annually to Illinois’ economy. An announcement regarding the separation of Exelon Utilities and Exelon Generation $EXC

Exelon's Board of Directors has approved a plan to separate Exelon Utilities, comprised of the company’s six regulated electric and gas utilities, and Exelon Generation, its competitive power generation and customer-facing energy businesses.

This will result in two publicly traded companies with the resources necessary to best serve customers and sustain long-term investment and operating excellence. Read more: https://bit.ly/3bz871j

Happy birthday Nuclear Fission!!🎉🎉

The Curve is Exponential

"I couldn't see the instruments," said Weil. "I had to watch Fermi
every second, waiting for orders. His face was motionless. His eyes darted from one dial to another. His expression was so calm it was hard. But suddenly, his whole face broke into a broad smile."

Fermi closed his slide rule —

"The reaction is self-sustaining," he announced quietly, happily. "The
curve IS exponential."

The group tensely watched for twenty-eight minutes while the world's
first nuclear chain reactor operated. The upward movement of the pen was leaving a straight line. There was no change to indicate a leveling off. This was it.

"O.K., 'Zip' in," called Fermi to Zinn who controlled that rod.

The time was 3:53 p.m. Abruptly, the counters slowed down, the pen slid down across the paper. It was all over. Man had initiated a self-sustaining nuclear reaction—and then stopped it. He had released the energy of the atom's nucleus and controlled that energy.

Our employees have always raised money for deserving local charities by selling t-shirts during refueling outages. During the station’s final outage this fall, we raised $10K for Rockford Rescue Mission to help people affected by the pandemic. https://bit.ly/36ow48S
