If these walls could talk, they would have 146 years of stories to tell.

When we took on this beautiful home, built in 1880, our goal was simple: save it.

We aren't attempting a historically exact restoration, nor are we trying to turn this home into something it was never meant to be. Our goal is to preserve as much of its original character as reasonably possible while giving it the structural integrity, safety, efficiency, and modern amenities needed to carry it through another generation.

Where original features can safely and practically be saved, we intend to save them. Where age, rot, water damage, or deterioration makes that impossible, we will replace them with materials and details that complement the character of the home.

The front porch has already been a perfect example of the challenges that come with a 146-year-old house. Our original plan was to save it. Unfortunately, the steps and flooring were completely rotted through and structurally unsafe. We braced the porch roof, rebuilt the floor and steps, and then attempted to repair the existing roof. Once we got into it, we discovered the wood was so deteriorated it wouldn't even hold nails.

At that point, saving it was no longer restoration—it was leaving an unsafe structure in place.

So, down it came.

We'll rebuild it with the goal of bringing back the look and character of the original porch as closely as practical, only this time it will be strong, safe, and ready for many more years of front-porch memories—and safe enough for the postman to deliver the mail .

And the porch is only part of the story.

There are gaping holes in the siding in multiple areas of the house. We've discovered raccoons living inside the walls and birds living in the walls, floors, and attic. Before we can worry about pretty finishes, we have to make this old girl safe, dry, secure, and weather-tight.

Our next priorities are closing and repairing the exterior openings to keep the wildlife out and getting the house sealed well enough that it can eventually be properly heated and cooled. The roof and windows will follow as the next major phase.

This won't happen overnight. Our crew works on these projects during their available downtime, so progress can sometimes look slow from the outside.

But great things take time.

We know there will always be different opinions about what should or shouldn't be done with an old home. We respect the history of these houses tremendously—that's one of the reasons we're investing the time, money, and effort into saving them in the first place.

Unfortunately, Harrison County has already watched too many beautiful old homes deteriorate until there was nothing left to save. We would rather thoughtfully rehabilitate one than watch another piece of our county's history collapse.

There is a long road ahead for this 1880 beauty, but underneath all those years of wear and tear, she still has plenty of life left in her.

Not every project can be saved—but every property deserves a thoughtful decision.

Our latest project, E. Market St. – Cadiz, involved a home built in 1908 that had sat vacant and unattended for more than 15 years. Many local residents watched as the structure slowly deteriorated, eventually becoming a safety concern for the neighborhood and surrounding community.

While we always appreciate the craftsmanship and character found in older homes, this particular structure had reached a point beyond practical restoration. The kitchen and attic had completely collapsed, many windows were broken out, and years of exposure, animal intrusion, and neglect had left the interior structurally compromised. Located directly across from the Harrison Central football field and school facilities, the property had become an increasing concern for public safety.

Before demolition, we made every effort to preserve pieces of the home's history. Original windows, doors, woodwork, banisters, a built-in boot bench, porcelain tubs, sinks, and other architectural elements were carefully removed and saved. Our goal is to restore and repurpose these materials in future projects, allowing a small part of this home's story to live on.

While it's never easy to see a historic structure come down, responsible redevelopment sometimes means recognizing when preservation is no longer feasible. Today, what was once an unsafe and deteriorating structure is now a clean, safe green space with the potential for new life and future investment.

A special thank you to Stull Excavating for completing the demolition. Their work helped transform a long-standing safety concern into a clean slate for future possibilities.

Henry Property Group remains committed to improving our community one property at a time—preserving what can be saved, respecting the past, and creating opportunities for the future.

Some buildings tell a story. Some deserve a second chance. Others make way for something new that can strengthen a community for generations to come.
We are proud to begin sharing the projects we’ve been working on throughout our community, starting with our first featured project: New Rumley East. What was once a dangerous structure is now a cleared green space waiting for its transformation and a new purpose.
Our goal is simple — invest in our community by restoring neglected properties, removing unsafe structures, developing new spaces, and creating housing and commercial opportunities that contribute to long-term growth and pride in the place we call home.
Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing before-and-after transformations, restoration projects, new builds, and the progress happening behind the scenes.

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we're reminded that one of the greatest freedoms our country has provided is the opportunity to build something of your own.

Today, part of the Henry Property Group team had the honor of being in Washington, D.C., to join the Relay Across America team as they carried the American flag across the finish line at the U.S. Capitol—an incredible journey of 3,016 miles in just 20 days from San Francisco to our nation's capital.

It was a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through determination, family and teamwork!

We wish everyone a meaningful Independence Day!
