Students at the University of Colorado Boulder developed Project MACULA, a lidar-assisted spacecraft landing system designed to help future spacecraft identify safe landing zones during descent. Using AMC servo drives, the team created a system capable of scanning terrain, detecting obstacles, and accurately evaluating landing sites in real time.

Project MACULA is a proof of concept for a lidar-assisted landing system for spacecrafts landing on planets where the surface is not well mapped. Ten aerospace engineering students from the University of Colorado Boulder undertook this task for their senior project.
