On Monday, June 1, Fulcrum Therapeutics announced the discontinuation of the pociredir program for the potential treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD).

We arrived at this difficult decision following discussions with the FDA and the conclusion that there was not a viable development path forward. This decision in no way diminishes our belief in the science or our profound respect for the SCD community.

We are beyond grateful for the SCD warriors, families, advocates, and broader community who walked alongside us, trusted us with their stories, participated in our clinical trials, advocated with policymakers, and shared their hopes for a better future. We are deeply saddened that this is the end of our journey when we know so much important work remains for the SCD community.

At Fulcrum, we believe community voices are central to the conversation, especially when the stakes are access, equity, and policies that affect the lived experiences of individuals with sickle cell.

Last month, our standing-room only Congressional Briefing was about elevating community voices, highlighting the many challenges faced by the SCD community, and our commitment to listen, learn, and take action.

Together, our voices pushed the conversation forward: the sickle cell community needs access to more options.

The room was full. The urgency was undeniable. And the message could not be ignored. Recently on Capitol Hill, Fulcrum hosted a standing-room-only congressional briefing that brought together community voices to confront the reality of sickle cell disease in the U.S.

The message was clear: individuals living with sickle cell disease deserve better. More treatment options. Improved and timelier care. Policy action to ensure equitable access and continued innovation.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who shared their stories, showed up, and moved this conversation forward, including congressional staff, patient advocates, clinicians, and policy leaders.

We are especially thankful to our partners, MedicAlert Foundation and Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc., as we work together to address real barriers to sickle cell care in emergency situations with the MedicAlert Smart Medical ID Card.

At Fulcrum, we’re committed to partnering with the community to push past barriers and improve the whole journey, from innovation to access and beyond.
