The market information you need, as well as updated receiving hours and other information, is still there, but in a much cleaner, easier-to-read format.
You also have the opportunity to sign up to receive daily messages from our merchandising team, ensuring that you have the most current information possible when making grain marketing decisions.

Have you ever wondered how an ear of corn develops?

It really is a fascinating process that requires some pretty incredible timing, and it all begins with pollination.

When the time is right, the tassel at the top of the corn plant releases its pollen, and wind and gravity carry those grains throughout the cornfield, hopefully to the waiting silks on the young ears of corn.

When a pollen grain lands on a silk, it begins traveling down that silk strand toward the corn cob. If the pollination process is successful, the kernel connected to that silk will begin developing, which is why every strand of silk matters. If a single silk doesn't receive pollen, the kernel connected to it will not develop, and there will be missing kernels on the cob.

So those little strands of silk you see during the growing season are actually playing a big role in determining what the finished ear will look like!

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to BNSF and expressed your concerns regarding the blocked crossings. With the amount of people that have contacted them, they recognize the impact this issue is having on our community.

For clarification, NCP does not control when BNSF arrives in Cambridge, nor do we know how many railcars they will have attached to their train or whether crossings will be blocked during their operations.

To briefly explain what is happening: BNSF services NCP each weekday. On two of those days, while delivering railcars at NCP, they also handle railcars for customers located east of Cambridge, extending as far as Hastings. When they are moving approximately 35 or more railcars for those customers, they disconnect part of the train at the easternmost switch and temporarily leave those cars on the main track, which can result in all crossings being blocked. They then continue switching railcars at NCP and west of the crossings before reconnecting the train and clearing the area. This process can take a significant amount of time due to the multiple switching moves required.

Over the past week, I have been in contact with several BNSF representatives. They are aware of the safety concerns and community frustrations caused by these prolonged crossing blockages. BNSF has indicated that they are working with local crews and are committed to modifying their operating procedures to reduce the likelihood of blocking both major crossings for an extended time.

It’s time to start thinking about the 2027 NCP calendar! Once again, the theme is “general agriculture”. If your photo gets picked, you’ll score $50 and major bragging rights!

What kind of photos are we looking for?
- Farm scenes
- Farm equipment
- Farm animals
- Anything that depicts life on the farm or is related to farming and agriculture.

Please note that the images must be high resolution – so if you are using your phone, set it on the largest file setting or highest quality setting. The photos also need to be landscape/horizontal to fit our calendar format.

Deadline is October 16.
