Frigid temperatures are headed our way over the next few days and now’s the time to prep your home, business, or shop to avoid frozen or busted pipes.

A few simple things you can do:
• Drip faucets (especially ones on exterior walls)
• Cover outdoor spigots/hose bibs
• Disconnect garden hoses
• Cover any exterior visible pipes with pipe insulation or at least old towels or rags
• Close foundation vents
• Keep crawlspace doors shut
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate
• Open interior doors to allow heat to circulate through rooms
• Shut off irrigation & sprinkler systems
• Place a heat lamp in well house, but not too close that it burns or melts pipes
• Know where your main water shutoff is — just in case

Frozen pipes can turn into a very expensive mess fast. A little prep now can save a lot of headache later.

If however you do get a leak or pipes bursting just call us at NIACO, we are here for you.

Stay warm and stay safe out there!

Today around 12:30pm, an older model black pickup truck with two occupants pulled up near a job site of ours off Saint Matthews Road. While crews were on scissor lifts, the passenger jumped out of the truck, ran up on the job site and stole a Carhartt coat owned by one of our employees, jumped back in the truck, and drove away at a high rate of speed.

Passenger has not been identified at this time but was described as African American, 20’s or 30’s in age, male, skinny, braids in hair, clean shaven. Orangeburg County Sheriffs Office has been alerted and a report has been filed, we are hoping footage at nearby businesses can help us identify the individual. The coat is a gray XL Carhartt zip up with black collar and “NIACO CONSTRUCTION” on the back right shoulder. Photo in comments for reference.

We are sharing this post as a precautionary. With an individual stealing an article of clothing with our business name on it we wanted to be transparent with our customers over this incident just in case this person tries to use our business name under false pretenses. We don’t have any black pick up trucks in our fleet, and the only way one of our employees would be at your job site is if Chris, Bruce, or Ryan scheduled them to be there. If you have any questions, concerns, or information please call us at (803) 707-4124 or (803) 378-8265.

Tip of the Week:

It’s suppose to drop down to 22° tonight so make sure to unhook your water hoses from the spigots, if you have a spigot cover put it on, put a heat bulb over your well pump, and leave your cold water dripping over night! And if you don’t… give us a call tomorrow and we’d be happy to come out and fix your waterlines when they burst, just call us! (803) 378-8265

But in all seriousness, we pray yall stay warm tonight just be sure to take preemptive measures to protect your home or business!

Many homes have HVAC registers mounted to the toe-kick of their vanity’s, pictured below, and while they may seem harmless they’re actually a leading cause of floor failure, especially in linoleum and vinyl flooring.

Here’s why:
When warm or cool air blows directly into an enclosed vanity space, moisture tends to get trapped. Over time, that moisture has nowhere to escape and begins to soak into the subfloor, especially from the HVAC register blowing horizontally across your floor.

If you’re experiencing soft spots or active floor issues, have active black mold around your vanity or vanity register, the issue may be the register location although many attribute it to an active water leak which is not always the case.

The fix often requires more than a surface repair. Proper ventilation, register relocation, and subfloor repair are key to stopping the problem for good. If you’re dealing with floor issues, contact us at NIACO. We’re seeing this problem more and more these days, catching it early can save thousands.
