It’s rare to see one 427 Ford FE side oiler, much less two at the same time! The story of the side oiler design: • The Problem: The 427 top-oiler produced massive horsepower and torque for racing. However, running high RPMs for hundreds of miles (such as in NASCAR or at Le Mans) meant oil reached the top of the engine first, starving the main and rod bearings of critical pressure. This often caused spun bearings or catastrophic bottom-end failures.
• The Fix: Ford redesigned the block casting in 1965 to create a “priority oiling” system inspired by marine engines. By running a dedicated gallery down the side of the block, oil hits the main journals directly at full pressure before going anywhere else

This is the same Ford 427 FE engine design that dominated NASCAR, NHRA drag racing, and powered the Lemans winning GT40 and Shelby Cobra 427
