We recently arrived on-site to help a customer whose system was short-cycling rapidly, with the thermostat losing power every single time there was a call for cooling. Our technician jumped into a deep-dive diagnostic, starting at the indoor air handler to rule out the indoor equipment before isolating the low-voltage circuit.

The true culprit was hiding out in the outdoor unit's 24V control circuit. A closer inspection revealed that the high-pressure switch circuit on the defrost board had failed and welded itself closed.
