Because we've been told that math is scary. Only smart people do math. The bottom line is, math is probably the only thing in the world that consistently makes sense. Those of us who have chosen math-heavy degrees shouldn't be shunned for recognizing and appreciating that consistency. Liking math shouldn't make anyone feel less connected to others. Seriously, if you are a math major (or if you're a chem or physics or engineering or any other science major) there are a lot of opportunities out there in the big wide world waiting for interested parties such as yourself. Ask around - research, travel, conferences - plenty to keep a body busy and satisfied.
