So what is this thin strip of liquid asphalt being shot on the road? Good Question! This is called longitudinal joint sealant. This liquid asphalt is placed directly beneath the joint prior to placing the final layer of asphalt. When the hot asphalt is placed on top, this material is rejuvenated and migrates up through the surface joint to serve as a waterproofing agent. While this practice has only become common in the past few years, early indications show this will make pavements last longer by reducing early joint failure. Is this material sticky? Yes it is, please try to avoid driving over this joint when at all possible as it has been known to stick to tires on hot summer days.
