This week Joe Demark, president and business manager of Local 25, joined the NJ Alliance for Action to talk about building data centers the right way. Here’s our final Myth vs. Truth installment.

🔴 The myth: You'll never have peace again, it's a constant industrial roar next door.

🟢 The truth: Noise is a legitimate concern and an engineering one, not a fixed fact. It is governed by setbacks, equipment enclosures, acoustic barriers and cooling choice, all set in the site plan and built by trades. Doubling the distance from the source cuts noise by about 6 decibels, and jurisdictions now require pre- and post-construction noise studies.

Every one of those mitigation measures is fabricated and installed by skilled tradespeople. Noise is not the price of a data center. It is the result of choices a community can require and trades can deliver.

Hold projects to enforceable limits. Build it right.

Joe Demark, president and business manager of Sheet Metal Workers Local 25, was at the NJ Alliance for Action yesterday talking about our state’s data center future. So we’ll be unpacking facts and myths over the next few days.

🔴 MYTH: Data centers will drain millions of gallons from our water supply every day.

🟢 FACT: That figure describes old open-loop evaporative cooling. Modern facilities increasingly use closed-loop and air-cooled designs that fill once and recirculate, cutting daily use dramatically. One closed-loop campus reports peak use near 22,000 gallons a day, roughly 65 homes, against about 5 million for an evaporative campus of similar size.

Cooling design is decided in the plans, and it is installed by tradespeople. The difference between a facility that strains a town's water and one that barely touches it comes down to engineering and skilled installation.

Don't block the buildout. Build it right and the water concern largely answers itself.

Today, our president and business manager Joe Demark is at an NJ Alliance for Action event for a panel discussion on how we can all get New Jersey’s data center buildout right.

So we’ll be unpacking facts and myths over the next few days.

🔴 MYTH: Data centers will spike everyone's electric bill and crash the grid.

🟢 FACT: Cost pressure is real, and the answer is building new supply, not blocking it, because we had an issue with the regional grid long before ground was even broken for a data center.

New Jersey lawmakers have introduced a package of bills and resolutions aimed at requiring large data centers to bring new clean power and absorb their own grid and capacity costs rather than lean on the existing grid. The policy direction is clear, and the buildout it points to is enormous.

That power gets built by skilled trades. Sheet metal workers, electricians and the rest of the building trades are the people who actually deliver the generation and transmission this state needs.

Don't block the buildout. Build it right.
