Technology is always leading the way. Sealing any building is very important not only for energy efficiency but also for health and comfort reasons.

Something as simple as an improved sprayable liquid sealant can be a very important tool to improve the efficiency of newly constructed commercial buildings. That’s why we were proud to learn that The Dow Chemical Company’s LIQUIDARMOR sealant, which received funding support from the Energy Department and was evaluated at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, recently won the 2016 Gold Edison Award for Building Construction & Lighting Innovations. The Edison Awards honor the best in innovation and excellence in the development of new products and services. Learn more about how and why we supported this critical construction product: http://go.usa.gov/cJGhP.

It is important to make sure your ducting, the cylinder metal pipes that supply and return conditioned air, to be properly sealed. Otherwise things like dust, mold, toxins, etc could get sucked in from a leak and circulate bad quality air in the house. The picture below shows what could get sucked in leaky ducts, especially if they are located in a crawl space that is not properly lined with a v***r barrier and insulation is hanging loosely. Leaky ducts can cause problems like asthma, allergies and so much more!!! Not to mention you may be spending a fortune on your electric bill trying to heat/cool your house since all that air is getting sucked out or in and not put into the house. Get those ducts checked and sealed!

Most residents in Nevada pay about $0.09 a kilowatt hour for electricity. Using the example we posted on Wednesday you have a light fixture with incandescent light bulbs that uses 180 watts of energy. Then you change those out for LEDS and the light fixture now uses 30 watts. How much less money are you spending on just that light fixture a year?

Here are the equations:

Watts X 0.09 (cost of electrcity) = ANSWER

ANSWER / 1000 (to convert into kilowatts) =ANSWER 2

ANSWER 2 X 365 (days in a year) = ANSWER 3

Take the difference between the incan. - LED # = FINAL ANSWER

Consider this:

You have a light fixture that has 3 incandescent light bulbs that are 60 watts each. Then you change out those 3 light bulbs for LEDs that are 10 watts each. What is the new reduced wattage?

Give the equation: Watts X Number of lights = ANSWER

Incandescent Watt # - LED watt # = FINAL ANSWER

ALWAYS put the generator outside. Generators emit Carbon Monoxide and could cause serious health problems including death, if left inside the house. The picture below is the correct way to use a generator: outside the house and several feet away from the home.

The answer to last week's picture of a fridge and a water heater is here!
This natural gas water heater has a natural draft system which means it relies on the air inside the house to help push the carbon monoxide byproduct out. There is no fan that helps pull out the bad air like most modern day gas water heaters. Therefore carbon monoxide could leak into this house. Also the water heater is located in an area that has people frequently there, the kitchen. Moreover, the dryer, not pictured here is right down the hall. Dryers pull area inside the house to dry clothes and it can pull carbon monoxide out of the exhaust pipe of the water heater and into the house, because it is a natural draft system. These water heaters can be a potential hazard. Have your house tested for carbon monoxide, especially if you own one of these water heaters. Plus the exhaust pipe is connected into the chimney which is not the best way to vent out the byproduct.

Did you know that incandescent light bulbs only last 800 hours use 60 - 100 watts and are 90% heat, while LED light bulbs last 20000 hours, are ~ 9 watts and only use 10% heat?

Make the change to LEDs for your wallet's sake and our energy future.
