Aluminum vs. Wood: Why Fire Resistance Matters
Wood has long been a popular choice for architectural screening because of its warmth and natural appearance. But when fire performance, durability, and long-term maintenance are part of the conversation, aluminum has some important advantages.
The biggest difference is simple: solid aluminum is non-combustible, while wood is combustible. Fire-retardant treatments can improve how wood performs in a fire, but they do not make wood non-combustible. For commercial, multifamily, hospitality, healthcare, and other code-sensitive projects, that distinction can have a major impact on material selection. Lumabuilt
That doesn’t mean fire performance should be judged by material alone. The complete assembly still matters — including attachments, substrates, adjacent materials, and applicable code requirements. But from a material standpoint, aluminum does not ignite or add wood fuel to the exterior of a building. Lumabuilt
There are long-term benefits as well. Compared with real wood, architectural aluminum is designed to resist warping, cracking, splitting, rot, moisture damage, and pests. It also typically requires less routine maintenance because it does not need recurring staining, sealing, or refinishing to maintain its performance and appearance. Lumabuilt
For projects that still want the warmth and visual character of wood, wood-grain aluminum can offer a strong middle ground — giving designers the look of natural timber while gaining the durability, dimensional stability, recyclability, and lower-maintenance performance of aluminum. Lumabuilt
For architects and contractors, the takeaway is straightforward: material selection should account for more than appearance. Fire performance, exposure, maintenance, lifecycle cost, and the complete building assembly all matter.
And in applications where those factors are critical, aluminum can offer a more predictable long-term solution than real wood.
