Been a while. It'll probably be a while until the next one.

We did our first father-son knife making lesson today. And boy, did he love it. I've spent a lot of time talking to other people about how to help my son with moderate cerebral palsy to make a knife.

I ended up buying the NordicEdge blade grinding fixture from Brian Housewert quite a while ago, and we finally broke it out today. It worked like a charm. Abe has almost zero functional use of his right hand and limited use of his right arm; this tool has handles that are large enough for him to wrap his hand around use as a helping guide.

Teaching my kids new skills, and watching them get excited about those new things, is one of my favorite things to do with them.

Look at those grind lines. They're even on both sides, which is tough to do your first time, even with a jig. Even if they were a wavy, bacon-y mess, I'd still be proud.

Kids just want time. They want to be a part of your life. It doesn't matter what you're doing. Invite them in, and let them know they're important to you. That's it. That's the entire secret.

Give them your time, and their lives will be all the richer for it.

I'm coming up on 7 years clean and sober today. I don't remember a lot from the toddler years for my older two. I don't remember a lot of my life from those early years of sobriety.

I've not seen it mentioned elsewhere. Getting sober, getting clean, is hard. Staying that way is even harder. Everyone says that.

What they don't tell you is that, depending on how big an as***le you were, it's infinitely harder just trying to navigate life without the crutch. Trying to be present. To remember. To provide and lead and love and keep growing up even as you shepherd your own kids.

The greatest gift I've been given in sobriety is our third child. I'm getting to experience a toddler with a completely clear head and open eyes. There's no anger, no cravings to drown or work through. Just ordinary life.

As the world continues to spin, I do everything I can to slow that inexorable rotation as much as possible. Dance parties. Art. Baseball. Reading the same book for the billionth time.

I thought these days were gone for good. There were many days and many more nights in the first two years that I thought it would all be gone for good.

Being an addict is hard. Being sober, clean, is hard. There's a choice to be made either way.

I've lost many friends at this point in life to substances. I've shown up on scenes with active overdoses and alcohol poisoning. I've said "we'll do everything we can" to mothers and fathers while racing to the hospital.

Nobody will ever say that to my wife. Nobody will ever say that to my kids.

There's a mantra I hold deep in the pudding of my brain: Be The Man They Think You Are.

That's it. That's what keeps me going, putting one foot in front of the other, when I don't want to. When I'm tired, hurt, whatever.

I won't waste the years I've got left. They're short. And each day is as long as I can possibly make it.

I can finally share this now that it went to its new owner.

A lot of smiths cut their teeth on farrier rasps (nail files for horses) for their first projects. They're fairly easy to come by, they forge fairly easily, and they look cool. I never made one because I couldn't find any rasps.

Until my buddy realized we'd been waiting most of our adult lives to meet each other and become friends. Tory is a farrier and, coincidentally, has a lot of used rasps.

Another friend of mine who was one of my first customers recently had his truck broken into and the knife I made for him years ago was stolen. So I said hey, I've got all this new steel, let me practice and replace it for you for free.

Went for a segmented, blacked out blade and handle with a bright pop of Tiffany Blue to set the whole thing off.

After the frantic pace of production, it was nice to work on a single piece. My oldest son helped me out, I got to try a couple new things, and I actually enjoyed the time spent figuring it all out.

Sometimes you just need a gigantic Norwegian friend to give you some giant horsey nail files to reset and have a little fun swinging a hammer.

When we can't control anything going on, in seemingly any aspect of life, a good course of action is to practice what you already know.

It's good to be good at something. To disappear into excellence, even if for a few short minutes, to reset and remember that the sun will rise again.
