Safety First!!

Material fatigue is normal.
Recently in Berlin I was discussing fatigue with my good friends Hannes and Jakob at Rock Exotica Germany and looking at stress/strain curves during cyclic loading. One thing is clear, plastic deformation, which is irreversible damage, begins at about 50% of the 3sigma MBS of an aluminium carabiner. This is why many of us state that you should never exceed 25% of the MBS during use. If you knowingly do this then you should remove the carabiner from service and destroy it. At least one reputable and well-known manufacturer actually prints this in their instructions.
Put simply, you should never load a 22kN carabiner beyond 5.5kN.

Please read this important information regarding Safety and Carabiners. Be sure to vet your training company's ability to teach the correct practices and procedures to your crews. Accurate and up-to-date regs should be a part of their curriculum.

Reshare from NATE's Advisory Bulletin from this morning:
"Carabiners are NOT intended for rigging applications involving material handling and overhead lifting. After consultation with many of the industry's major tower owner/vertical real estate companies, carabiners will NOT be allowed for material rigging applications on any of their sites. Violation of this policy could lead to immediate job shutdown and possible suspension from future work."
