🧱 Project Spotlight | USAFA Cadet Preparatory School Dormitory
📍 U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado

🏗️ Barnes Construction Company performed masonry work for the new Cadet Preparatory School dormitory, a four-story, approximately 90,000-square-foot facility designed to accommodate 252 cadet candidates in 126 rooms.

🏢 Led by the Mortenson–Clark Nexsen design-build team, the project consolidates housing from three existing dormitories into one building, with expanded common areas, study spaces, and a sheltered drill pad for formations and training.

🧱 The architectural design combines brick with aluminum panels, connecting the Academy’s established character with modern materials. masonry work forms part of this investment in durable housing for the next generation of cadet candidates.

**SMALL JOINTS. BIG IMPACT.**

🌡️ As temperature and moisture change, masonry expands and contracts. Without room for that movement, stress builds and walls can crack.

🧱 In clay brick, expansion joints allow adjoining wall sections to expand.
▪ In concrete block (CMU), control joints create planned separations that help control where shrinkage cracks develop.

🔧 For these joints to work, mortar must not bridge the gap. Backer rod controls sealant depth, while flexible sealant helps keep water out as the joint opens and closes.

Correct placement, width, and installation turn a simple gap into a functional construction detail.

🏗️ **The best lessons come from the jobsite: we’ve seen our properly installed joints make a difference, and through our restoration work, we’ve corrected details overlooked in completed projects.**

At first glance, the exterior finishes of Stucco and EIFS can look almost identical. However, what’s underneath tells a very different story.

At Barnes Construction Co., we know that what’s behind the surface is just as important as what you see on the outside. And while our experienced teams can easily tell the difference, today we’re sharing the key to understanding what sets these two systems apart:

Traditional Stucco is a cement-based exterior system known for its strength, durability, and long-term performance.

EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System) is a multi-layer exterior system that incorporates insulation, a reinforced base coat, and a finish coat providing a lightweight exterior solution with continuous insulation capabilities.
