Jef-Scot Metal Industries

Jef-Scot Metal Industries Jef-Scot is a non-ferrous foundry, founded in 1972, providing castings, machining and finishing services to customers in North America.

Jef-Scot Metal Industries has a very broad list of casting customers. Many of them have been depending upon us for more than 25 years. Some have been with us since our inception in 1972. A key to the continuation of these relationships is our ability to satisfy customers with varied volume needs in a compressed timeframe. Our CNC machining capability and stocking considerations allow customers to

improve inventory turn and reduce administration and logistics costs. We take pride in our ability to confront the most challenging jobs and developing foundry process controls that can consistently deliver the best value. We have proven this with castings weighing several ounces and those weighing several hundred pounds. We can consider orders from the prototype quantity level to production runs of several thousand pieces. Our daily objective is to improve in every aspect of our business.

With the acquisition of Broward Casting Foundry, Jef-Scot Metal Industries has been producing castings for our Sani Kan product. Sani Kan was the first proprietary product launched by Broward Casting.

Sani Kan has been a preferred method of trash and garbage concealment for more than 60 years. Sani Kan was the brainchild of Ronald Gatto, Sr who built one for himself to solve the garbage odor and animal intrusion at his home. In 1958 Ron had a simple yet ingenious goal: to keep animals out of his trash, eliminate the odors that drew them in, and prevent high winds from blowing over his trash can. His original homemade prototype quickly won over friends and family. By 1959, Ron had developed detailed drawings for the aluminum castings that would form the core operating components of the Sani Kan underground trash storage receptacle. That same year, he rented space in the old Dania Foundry and began producing his invention in the evenings. The concept resonated so deeply with Ron's father-in-law that, in 1962, he provided the funding to establish Broward Casting Foundry, turning the vision into a business.

Now there are approximately 100,000 units being utilized in North America and the Caribbean. The mission today remains the same as it was in the beginning.

Born from the need to protect garbage and trash from wildlife and maintain clean and attractive properties. It can also resist high winds that make conventional garbage cans a dangerous projectile or at the least unable to contain the trash they are holding. Sani Kan combines practical design with rugged construction to provide a durable, maintenance free waste storage solution that protects homes, parks, marinas, golf courses, and other public spaces helping to create a clean environment and an attractive appearance.

The Sani Kan product is made in the USA near where it began in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The concrete shell is molded with an integrated aluminum casting that then serves to anchor the lid assembly. Each unit is produced with the commitment to using the best materials including high grade alloy cast aluminum, a galvanized trash container, a concrete shell, and stainless steel fasteners.

Accidents can happen and parts can become damaged or just need replacement. Each component part is available for purchase individually or as a full assembly. In most cases, they are in stock and ready for shipment.

Jef-Scot Metal Industries is proud to now be part of the Sani Kan success story.

’Twas the shift before Christmas, and in the foundry’s warm glow,
The crew forged aluminum in a masterful flow.
The molds were arranged by the furnace with care,
In hopes that new orders soon would be there.

Ryan, so determined, walked the shop with his plan,
Ensuring precision in each and every task at hand.
Amy, in HR, with her tasks ever vast,
Worked hard to shape a future both strong and steadfast.

Roy rallied the workers, his guidance sincere,
While Jesse inspired with warm holiday cheer.
Josh shaped no-bake with precision and skill,
And Tred mixed the sand with a masterful will.

Chance created cores with a craftsman’s finesse,
While Tyler, Matt, and Justin shaped molds with success.
Tim managed the melt where aluminum flowed,
And Shaq and Derek ground the castings to perfection they showed.

In the warehouse was Jay, keeping shipments on track,
With Floyd crafting patterns no detail could lack.
Andy shared wisdom, his vision held high,
While John checked the numbers, sharp as the sky.

Don worked with others, connecting with ease,
Finding new ways to help orders increase.
Tina handled accounts and whatever arose,
And Kelly’s fresh ideas gave the team a new glow.

When out in the yard there arose such a clatter,
The crew paused their work to see what was the matter.
Through the frosty night air came bells and a cheer,
And a bright red sleigh began to appear.

“Ho, ho, ho!” Santa called as he stepped from his ride,
With a sack full of papers and joy in his stride.
“My fine Jef-Scot crew, your reputation has spread,
And with it comes work to keep you ahead.

Your aluminum craft is unmatched in its art,
And new opportunities are just the start!
For Ryan, Andy, John, and this whole stellar team,
Your dedication has brought more than you’ve dreamed.

Josh, Tred, and Chance you have such skill and precision,
Tyler, Justin, and Matt, continue to prepare molds with a vision.
Tim, Shaq, and Derek, your work is so key,
And Floyd, your patterns bring pure artistry.

Jay, you ensure things are always on track,
And Tina, your efforts keep nothing off-stack.
Don, your ideas make new doors swing wide,
And Kelly’s fresh energy fills us with pride.”

He laid down the papers—fresh orders galore,
Promising challenges and growth to explore.
“Now back to your tasks, for the future looks bright,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

We would like to take a moment and celebrate the 80th birthday of the founding father of Jef-Scot Metal Industries, Andy Darien!

Andy Darien has been the President and Chief Executive officer of Tri-State Cast Technologies since its inception in 1974. His duties include customer relations, sales and marketing, quoting, project management, and global resource management.

Andy’s educational background includes BA and MBA degrees. This prepared him well for his initial work experience in commercial lending at Detroit Bank & Trust and the market research and product planning department of Teledyne Continental Motors.

Andy’s foundry education was gained on the shop floor of the original small aluminum and brass sand foundry. Pattern rigging, furnace room duties, loose molding, squeezer molding, core making, and casting finishing were taught to him by experienced foundrymen of that day. The skills learned then were fundamental in developing the foundation of the company as it exists today.

Andy began his working journey at a young age delivering newspapers near his childhood home in West Michigan. He and his two brothers saved up enough money to buy a car together and when he got his driver’s license, he took a job delivering fried chicken for a local restaurant. In college, he worked summers and weekends in construction, framing and roofing new homes for a prominent local builder. He tells many colorful stories about his experiences with people in those early jobs that laid the foundation for many of the skills he still uses in business today.

He and his wife Sharon, who’s parents were on his paper route, married in 1967. Today, they live in their dream home in Northern Michigan with their two Doberman’s, Dapper and Melody. Andy enjoys walking his dogs, long drives through country roads, reading, spending time with family and friends, sipping bourbon, and telling stories.

Happy Birthday Andy!

06/10/2024

A spectrometer may be the most important piece of equipment in our foundry. It analyzes the chemistry for samples of incoming aluminum ingot and samples of each melt that we pour. This is critical because aluminum alloys are selected by the design engineer to meet the mechanical properties required for the application in which the casting is to be used. If the chemistry does not meet the alloy’s specification for each chemical element, then the mechanical property specification cannot be met. This can cause casting failure in high stress applications.

Jef-Scot Metal Industries recently replaced its old spectrometer that had been in service for many years. The old machine did a fine job but once it performed the analysis, it could only print out the results. The new spectrometer is a smart machine. It can store results and communicate with other computers. It can also be accessed and controlled from other electronic devices. The machine is also easy to maintain. The manufacturer can remotely access the new spectrometer for trouble shooting or training. This new machine enhances our material traceability and is very important in a robust quality system.
