The Silent Enemy of Your Assets

Corrosion rarely announces its presence, it develops quietly, weakening equipment from within until failure occurs. Understanding its different forms is the first step toward effective inspection, prevention, and asset integrity management.

Here are some of the most common types of corrosion and their impact on industrial assets:
๐Ÿ”น Uniform Corrosion โ€“ Gradually attacks the entire exposed surface, causing an even loss of material over time.
๐Ÿ”น Pitting Corrosion โ€“ Produces small but deep pits that can pe*****te the material and lead to unexpected leaks or failures.
๐Ÿ”น Galvanic Corrosion โ€“ Occurs when two dissimilar metals are electrically connected in the presence of an electrolyte, causing the more active metal to corrode faster.
๐Ÿ”น Erosion-Corrosion: Results from the combined action of corrosion and high-velocity or turbulent fluid flow, accelerating material loss.
๐Ÿ”น Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC): Forms cracks due to the combined effects of tensile stress and a corrosive environment, often leading to sudden failures.
๐Ÿ”น Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC): Caused by microorganisms that alter the local chemical environment and significantly accelerate corrosion.
๐Ÿ”น Intergranular Corrosion: Progresses along the grain boundaries of an alloy, reducing its strength while leaving the surface relatively unaffected.
๐Ÿ”น Under-Deposit Corrosion (UDC): Develops beneath deposits such as scale, sludge, or debris, where stagnant conditions create localized corrosion cells.
๐Ÿ”น Filiform Corrosion: Spreads beneath protective coatings in fine thread-like patterns, making it difficult to detect until significant damage has occurred.

Every corrosion mechanism requires a different inspection strategy and mitigation approach. Identifying the correct damage mechanism early can significantly improve equipment reliability, extend service life, and reduce the risk of unplanned shutdowns.

Which corrosion mechanism is the greatest challenge in your facility or industry? Share your experience in the comments.
