Your chimney is more than just a place to vent your fireplace.
It’s a part of the homes structure
Often used to vent your appliances (boilers, hot water tanks, furnaces)
And of course the reason you can enjoy the cooler weather that comes with fall while sitting in front of a warm fire.
While chimneys often go unappreciated, they can be major culprits of:
🧱Water intrusion
🧱Mold and rot in your attic and drywall
🧱Safety concerns with falling bricks or loose caps
In order to ensure that you don’t have these issues, a detailed inspection of the following should occur on a regular basis
✅Flashing (Is it cut into a mortar joint, water intrusion occuring, soft wood under the shingles?)
✅Brick (Are they spalled, split, recessed to where water can intrude?)
✅Mortar joints (Cracked open or missing?)
✅Crown (concrete broken, shifted, pitted?)
✅Caps (attached to the flue, not blocking air flow?)
✅Flue liners (Properly lined for appliances, fireplaces, inserts?)
If you don’t check, you will never know and if you never know, it will only guarantee a bigger problem.
