October is National Fire Prevention Month, and here is a check most people have never done. Smoke detectors expire. The sensors inside wear out over time, and after about 10 years an alarm may not respond to smoke the way it should, even if it still beeps when you press the test button.

The quick check:

> Twist the alarm off its base

> Find the date of manufacture on the back

> More than 10 years old, or no date? Replace it

It takes about a minute per alarm, at work and at home. While it's down, write the replace-by year on it with a marker so next time the answer is right there.

What happens when you combine flying prizes, chemistry, and curious students? A crowd.

For Manufacturing (MFG) Day, we showed local high school students how we produce high-purity hydrocarbon products that are used in everyday applications like refrigerants and aerosols. Then we put their chemistry knowledge to the test with questions like, "How do we separate liquid mixtures?"

Students answered questions, earned prizes, and learned about the incredible career paths available in manufacturing.

That's what MFG Day is all about: turning curiosity into opportunity. And yes, catching a little swag along the way.

October is Fire Prevention Month, which makes it a good time to build a habit that takes only seconds. When was the last time you actually looked at your fire extinguisher?

There are a few things to check. Make sure the pin and plastic tamper seal are still in place and the extinguisher is not dented or rusted. But pay special attention to the little dial on top. That gauge shows whether the extinguisher has the right pressure to work.
Here is what the needle tells you:

> Green: ready to go
> Red on the left: undercharged
> Red on the right: overcharged

Make sure it is in the green. An overcharged or undercharged extinguisher is no help in an emergency, so if it is in the red, have it serviced or replaced. A few seconds, once a month, at work and at home.

Ever wondered what the TEST and RESET buttons on some of your outlets are actually for? You are far from the only one.

Those outlets are GFCIs, and they are designed to cut power almost instantly if electricity starts going somewhere it should not, like through water. That is why they show up in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors.

Testing one takes about ten seconds. Plug in a lamp, press TEST, and the lamp should turn off. Press RESET and it comes back on. If nothing happens, or it will not reset, it is time to call an electrician. Once a month is the recommended habit.

Bonus tip: if an outlet in your bathroom or garage stops working, check for a tripped GFCI nearby. One of them often controls several outlets, and a quick press of RESET usually brings everything back.

When it comes to next-generation aerosol solvents, the question is no longer, "What replaces this solvent?" but rather "What solvent system delivers performance while meeting the next wave of regulations?"

Presenting at SATA's fall meeting, Diversified CPC's Robert McElhatten explained there is no universal replacement solvent; the solution is often a blend of solvents.

"The industry has moved from one-for-one substitution toward multi-component solvent systems built around a specific performance and regulatory target," he said.

As regulations continue to reshape the industry, the focus is shifting from replacement chemistry to formulation strategy.
