Congrats to Allie Wittmann! Allie, daughter of Terri Wittmann, our Senior Strategic Account Manager, recently completed an externship at The Power of Purity® Innovation Center. An externship is a short-term, hands-on learning opportunity where students shadow professionals to get a firsthand look at a role or workplace. During her time with us, Allie worked hands-on with gas chromatographs and gained an inside look at the plant's inner workings.

Allie is entering her junior year at DeSales University, where she's majoring in Chemistry. Congratulations, Allie, and best of luck with the rest of your studies.

SAFETY TIP: Hearing loss is permanent, so protect your hearing before the damage happens.

Whether you're working at a plant, using lawn equipment at home, or enjoying a concert, hearing protection matters.

Prolonged exposure to noise above 85 dB can cause permanent hearing damage. According to NIOSH, 85 dB is considered safe for about eight hours. Every 3 dB increase cuts that safe exposure time in half. That means 88 dB is safe for about four hours, and 91 dB for only two.

Common sources of harmful noise include:
• Gas mowers, leaf blowers, and shop vacs
• Concerts, races, and fireworks
• Headphones at high volume

Signs the noise around you is too loud:
• You have to raise your voice to talk to someone three feet away
• Your ears ring afterward
• Sounds seem muffled after you leave

Protect your hearing by:
• Keeping foam earplugs in your car, toolbox, or bag
• Wearing hearing protection during yard work and when using power tools
• Using earplugs at concerts, races, and fireworks
• Keeping headphone volume around 60 percent and taking listening breaks

Hearing loss happens gradually, without pain or warning. Once it's gone, it cannot be restored.

SAFETY TIP: Never pour anything down a storm drain.

Stormwater flows directly to local rivers and streams with no treatment in between. Whatever it picks up at a facility goes with it, including oil, chemicals, and debris that can cause real harm to waterways and aquatic life.

Report spills immediately. Keep outdoor areas clean. Keep drains clear. Everyone plays a role in protecting local waterways.

On a sunny day at our Channahon plant, we kicked off our 9th Annual Wellness Challenge with great food, prizes, and games (including a water balloon toss that got a little heated).

Thank you to everyone who joined us. Over the coming weeks, employees will earn points by tracking physical activity and healthy habits as they work their way up the leaderboard and compete for the top spot.
