Mercedes-Benz revealed the 2027 S 680 GUARD 4MATIC in January 2026 with a very specific claim: the only series-production limousine certified to VR10 for its glass and its opaque body areas together.
Why the careful wording? Because in the VPAM standard, a vehicle is rated at its weakest area. Paragraph 4.3 says individual areas cannot be classified in isolation — so a car with VR10 glass and VR9 doors is simply a VR9 car. The Audi A8 L Security is a real example: VR10 glazing, VR9 bodywork, VR9 vehicle.
That single rule explains most of the confusion in this industry.
Here's the rest of it in plain terms:
🔹 VR10 is the ceiling. VPAM-BRV Edition 3 defines exactly ten vehicle classes. There is no VR11. The "VR14" you may have seen comes from a separate materials guideline — panels can be tested above 10, vehicles cannot be classified above VR10.
🔹 VR9 vs VR10 comes down to one cartridge. VR9 stops armor-piercing 7.62x51mm NATO. VR10 stops the heavier 7.62x54R — the round fired by the Dragunov SVD and the PKM machine gun, which circulate across the Sahel, Libya, Iraq, Central Asia and Eastern Europe in quantities no NATO r***e matches.
🔹 Weight is the real cost. Armor adds 600 to 1,500 pounds, 150 to 300 per door. A factory windshield weighs 25 pounds. An A9 ballistic windshield weighs about 200 pounds. We layer certified steel with composites to cut up to 40% of the mass, then check every build against its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating — because an overloaded vehicle loses braking distance and stability exactly when you need both.
🔹 And no, armored cars are not bomb proof. We say that plainly. Certified vehicles resist defined blast threats up to a tested limit — VPAM's ERV guideline covers charges like the DM51 hand gr***de. Large IEDs and vehicle-borne IEDs belong to MRAP territory on purpose-built hulls. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
