Conquering CHD is saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. William I. Norwood. His daughter notified the CHD community that Dr. Norwood passed Sunday, December 13th.

The CHD community is ever thankful for his wisdom and innovation. Dr. Norwood’s legacy lives on through the patients he helped and through the providers who continue his work.
The Norwood operation was developed and first performed at Boston Children's Hospital in 1979. The first successful case came in 1981 and has allowed countless infants to live beyond expectation. Dr. Norwood’s work truly altered the course of CHD surgical care forever.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Norwood family.

76 years ago today in Congenital Heart Disease history, Dr. Alfred Blalock, guided by Vivien Thomas and Dr. Helen Taussig, performed the first BT Shunt on an 18-month-old little girl named Eileen, who weighed just 9 pounds.

This procedure lit the way for congenital heart surgery today and instilled hope that once "blue babies" could lead full lives.

Well, it is a race you sign up for online, we will send you a Heart and Sole event t-shirt, and instead of gathering at one place to participate, you run or walk the 5K wherever you would like. It can be in your neighborhood, on a trail, up a mountain, or on a treadmill! You pick!

Happy Birthday to Dr. Helen Taussig, born on this day in 1898!

Dr. Helen Taussig was the founder of the field of pediatric cardiology. Overcoming great resistance to become not only a physician but a preeminent cardiologist, Taussig earned her medical degree from Johns Hopkins in 1927. Due to hearing loss due to a childhood illness, Taussig mastered non-stethoscope ways to monitor the heart. Using these groundbreaking techniques, Taussig discovered the cause of “blue baby syndrome” and helped design a surgery to correct it.

Dr. Taussig, made all the advancements in CHD possible and for that we are grateful!
