The bell tower is being carefully hoisted into place, where the three large bells will form a harmonious peal that will call the seminary community to worship, mark special occasions, and celebrate the rich traditions of the Church. Soon, the tower will come alive with a voice that will be heard for generations.

We're honored to share a glimpse of the beautiful new three-bell installation that will soon take its place in the bell tower at St. Joseph's Seminary in Mount Holly, North Carolina.

This week, our team at Bell Foundry Christoph will begin installing this custom bell system—a project that represents craftsmanship, tradition, and a commitment to creating instruments that will serve generations to come.

Each bell has been carefully cast, tuned, and mounted to provide a rich, harmonious voice that will call the faithful to worship, mark life's special moments, and become part of the seminary's enduring legacy.

Based on conversations with the leadership of St. Joseph Seminary, Carillon Consultant and Designer Stan Christoph, President of Bell Foundry Christoph, selected a three-bell harmonic peal consisting of the musical notes A, C #, and E. A harmonic peal produces a bright, inspiring, and celebratory sound that is especially well suited for the Seminary grounds. The bells will serve many purposes, including calling Seminarians to Mass, marking celebratory occasions, sounding funeral tolls, and providing clock chimes and hour strikes.

The bells will soon be installed with handmade woven bell ropes, allowing them to be manually swung individually or all together. In addition, the system will include electromagnetic bell strikers and an automated control system to provide scheduled clock chimes and hour strikes.

The bells weigh approximately 1,000 pounds for the A bell, 585 pounds for the C # bell, and 320 pounds for the E bell. Despite their substantial size, they are being installed within one of the smallest bell chamber spaces we have worked with for a project of this scale. Achieving this precise fit requires careful coordination between the structural design, our detailed 3D CAD drawings, and the expertise of our technicians.

This installation will be a beautiful and meaningful addition to the Seminary campus, and we are honored to have played a role in bringing this project to life.

After months of careful planning and dedicated repairs, the bell tower comes alive once again!

This beautiful project has an interesting backstory as the basis for the sculptural design of this tower feature was the brainchild of Augustana Emeritus Professor of Art Steve Thomas; our part was to make modest adjustments to the structure to accommodate musically tuned cast bronze bells. This bell sculpture stands at the top of the campus green, near to the recently renovated and expanded chapel; the campus green gently slopes downward toward the football stadium several hundred yards away. The bells will ring out a Westminster clock chime and hour strikes, and peals for celebratory occasions, and for liturgical bell rings too.

The sculpture will be 48' tall and the largest bell is nearly 1500 lbs.

We’re pleased to create this project and look forward to hearing bells ring on this strikingly beautiful campus for the enjoyment of all who hear.
