Northern Michigan is having an identity crisis.

You’d think once the snow starts going away, we’re in the clear…but this is actually when we see a lot of weird HVAC issues pop up.

As everything melts:
• Snow piles can shift and re-cover vents
• Water can drip and refreeze overnight
• Outdoor units can get packed with heavy slush

So if you’re already outside enjoying the “warm up,” take a quick walk around and check things out.

There are a lot of us out here complaining about the snow…

…and then there are the people out in it all day moving it for everyone else.

Huge thank you to the plow drivers and city/county crews working long hours to keep roads clear and people safe.

Stay safe out there - and maybe give a wave next time you pass one of them!

Somewhere under all this snow… is your furnace vent.

And yes - there’s a good chance it’s buried right now.

Most homes have them:

• On the side of the house
• Near the basement wall
• Small hooded vent or PVC pipe

If you’re out shoveling anyway, take 30 seconds to find it and clear it out.

Future you (and your furnace) will be glad you did.

Not sure if your furnace vent might be blocked?

Here are a few warning signs to watch for:

• Your furnace keeps turning on and off
• The furnace suddenly shuts down
• Your carbon monoxide detector goes off
• Exhaust steam blows back toward the house

If you notice any of these, check your exterior vent and clear away snow or ice.

Staying aware of these signs can help prevent bigger problems during heavy snow.
