Here's what actually helps if you're trying to keep the smoke out at home:

-Filter upgrade: MERV 13 catches the fine particulate best, if your system can handle it. MERV 11 is a solid backup if not. (Check the arrow during installation so it's not installed backward, common mistake)
-Windows and doors closed: even with a good filter running, an open window undoes the work.
-Run your system more, not less: let the air keep cycling and filtering.
-Sensitive to smoke or have breathing issues? A standalone air purifier in your main room or bedroom adds an extra layer.
Once the smoke clears, swap back to your regular filter. No need to run a high-MERV filter longer than you have to.

UPDATE: The air quality is far worse than predicted, with monitors in the red and purple range, signifying risk to everyone. HDNW recommends limiting time outdoors, avoiding prolonged exercise, closing windows, and using air filters if you have them.

Poor air quality can affect your health. It may cause coughing, a scratchy throat, stinging eyes, and shortness of breath. While the air quality alert remains in effect, limit strenuous outdoor activities whenever possible, especially if you have asthma, heart or lung disease, are an older adult, or are caring for young children.

With a statewide air quality alert, we urge you to close your windows, check & upgrade your filters, and run the A.C.
