Imagine walking the halls of your brand-new school and stumbling across…a planetarium. 🪐

That’s just one of the many spaces students can now explore at Robeson County's new Career & Technical Education Center in Lumberton. The approximately 130,000 SF school brings hands-on learning to life through programs in welding, robotics, dental studies, pottery, automotive technology, culinary arts, supply chain and logistics, and much more.

Optima proudly provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection engineering, and technology services for a school designed to help students explore what’s possible and prepare for what comes next.

Serving up a double win! 🏐🏆 Team Optima Engineering served up two big wins, taking home both the regular-season and tournament titles in the Charlotte Area Architects Volleyball League! We loved mixing a little friendly competition with plenty of fun alongside our Charlotte AEC peers this summer.

A refreshed space supporting NC State Football Operations!

Optima provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for the 8,500 SF Murphy Center Kitchen and Dining Renovation. The project modernized the kitchen, dining facility, servery, and player lounge to support Wolfpack athletes and staff.

With many proud NC State graduates on our team, contributing to this project was especially meaningful for Optima.

Every path into engineering is unique.

For Morgan Gunter, it started with family.

His great-grandfather, grandfather, and father all worked in the electrical industry, and as he grew up, his dad encouraged him to pursue engineering.

Today, Morgan is a Principal and Electrical Engineer in our Raleigh office, but his story began generations before he joined Optima as an intern over 12 years ago.

"Engineering has always been part of my family's story. Now, it's part of mine too."

We're proud to continue our Why Engineering series by sharing the people and experiences that inspire our team.

Because sometimes a career isn't just a profession—it's a legacy.

We were proud to join Scotland Memorial Hospital, McCulloch England Architects, and other great team members in celebrating the groundbreaking of its Cancer Center Renovation and Expansion.

With additional infusion space, family support areas, and expanded pharmacy and staff spaces, this project will help the hospital care for more patients close to home. We are honored to contribute to a place that will provide comfort, hope, and support to families throughout Laurinburg and the surrounding communities.

Every path into engineering starts somewhere. Some begin with family, and sometimes... it starts with a saxophone.🎷

Our Why Engineering series continues with Steve Daley, PE, President of Optima, and we asked Steve why he chose engineering; his answer wasn't what you'd expect.

"Growing up in the '80s, I was convinced I was going to be a saxophone player touring with Huey Lewis, Hall & Oates, or Steely Dan. Then Nirvana and Green Day came along, and saxophone disappeared from popular music. I had to pivot."

So what came next? 📚️ Steve leaned into what he loved: math, physics, building things, and figuring out how they worked.

"I heard engineers know how things work, put things together, and solve problems. That sounded good to me. So I ran with it... and I'm very glad I did."

Sometimes the best careers begin with an unexpected detour.

We're certainly glad Steve found his way to engineering.

A new chapter begins for health and human services in Pender County!

This summer, Optima proudly celebrated the ribbon cutting for the new two-story, 90,000 SF Pender County Health & Human Services facility. We’re grateful to have provided engineering design services for this important community resource.

Our Why Engineering series continues with Megan Bechtold, a Mechanical Designer in our Charlotte office.

Megan began her journey with Optima as an intern in Raleigh while studying at NC State University. After graduating, she joined our team full-time and moved to Charlotte to begin the next chapter of her career.

For Megan, engineering offered the opportunity to build on her strengths while continuing to grow.

“I’ve always enjoyed solving problems and working hands-on, and I wanted a career that would challenge me every day. I also wanted to stand out and challenge expectations by pursuing a field where women are still vastly underrepresented.”

Knowing that she is helping increase female representation in engineering makes the work even more meaningful.

We’re proud to have emerging professionals like Megan bringing fresh ideas, determination, and purpose to our team.

Last Thursday, we had the privilege of celebrating the ribbon cutting for the new Hampton County High School alongside the Hampton County School District, LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD., students, educators, and community leaders.

This new school brings together two high school communities while creating expanded opportunities for students through modern classrooms, Career and Technical Education programs, STEM learning spaces, Advanced Placement courses, and enhanced technology.

Throughout the ceremony, one message resonated with everyone in attendance: this project is an investment in the future.

As South Carolina State Superintendent Ellen Weaver shared, "The most important thing being dedicated isn't a building. It's a belief that every child in Hampton County is worthy of investment."

We're honored to have provided the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering for a facility that will help students discover their passions, develop valuable skills, and prepare for whatever path lies ahead.

Congratulations to Hampton County School District, LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD., and all who made this exciting milestone possible!
