Case Study: Dillingen 2.0 MTPY MIDREX Flex Plant

The Dillingen plant in Germany demonstrates how next-generation MIDREX® Plant design can bring together flexibility, material handling, water treatment, digitalization, and community considerations within one 2.0 MTPY facility.

The plant is designed to support large-scale DRI production, including:
☑️ MIDREX Flex technology with hydrogen utilization
☑️ Hot and cold DRI production capabilities
☑️ Operational flexibility across pellets and lump ore
☑️ Integration with a new EAF melt shop

The project also incorporates extensive noise-reduction measures, including enclosed conveyors, clad process units, compressor silencers, and soundproof screening stations.

Dillingen shows how modern direct reduction plants are evolving to meet changing steelmaking requirements, while also addressing operational and community needs.

On World Environment Day, we’re reflecting on the progress made in ironmaking and the technologies shaping its future.

Last year also marked the 120-year anniversary of KOBE STEEL LTD, a legacy built on innovation, partnership and long-term commitment to industrial progress. Together, Midrex and Kobe Steel continue to drive technologies that support lower-emissions iron and steel production, helping shape the pathway toward a more sustainable future.

Technical exchange and industry collaboration were key themes at this year’s AISTech.

With more than 9,000 attendees, the event brought together steel producers, suppliers, engineers and technology providers from across the global steel industry.

Midrex was proud to contribute through technical presentations focused on electric heater technology and hydrogen-based solutions supporting lower-emission iron and steel production.

It was also valuable to engage with students during the Steel to Students Reception and discuss the technologies, operational challenges and career pathways shaping the next generation of steelmaking.

From technical sessions and speaker presentations to booth visits and industry connections, here’s a look at the moments that made this event impactful, including:

• 4 Midrex representatives presented during AISTech technical sessions, which featured discussions related to electric heater technology and innovation. Among the highlights was Paul Kazalski's presentation on "Comprehensive Development of an Electric Heater for Reducing Gas Generation in a DRI Plant," which showcased ongoing efforts to advance lower-emission steel production through innovative hydrogen heating solutions.

• Record breaking attendance, with over 9,000 attendees participating bringing together steel industry leaders, suppliers, customers and partners from around the world.

• Steel to Students Reception, a networking event for students to gain a firsthand look at some of the most advanced technologies shaping the steel industry. This event allowed Midrex employees to share insights with the next generation of leaders in the steel industry.

It was a pleasure for Midrex to attend the 2026 SEAISI Conference & Exhibition in Singapore.

The event brought together leaders from across the steel industry to discuss the technologies, markets, and operational challenges shaping the region’s next phase of development.

Pei Yoong Koh presented “Advancing Low Carbon Ironmaking: MIDREX Flex®, MIDREX H2™ and Electric Heating Innovations,” sharing perspectives on flexible direct reduction technology and pathways for lower-carbon emission ironmaking.

Conferences like this are incredibly important for Midrex as we continue supporting conversations around low-carbon iron and steel production, innovation, and long-term industry progress.
