The next time your school talks upgrades, put “one center sub” on the wish list. That can translate to more energy, and a show that pulls the audience IN.

If the vocals aren’t clear, the mix isn’t doing its job.
Start with the voices.
Get them clear and comfortable first.
Then build the rest of the mix around that.
That one shift can make school shows much easier to run.

Sound gets easier when it stops being a tech-week-only job.
A lot of school sound stress comes from waiting too long.
And a lot of sound problems are invisible until someone teaches you what to notice.
Start the prep earlier, and the whole show gets lighter.
What’s one sound task at your school that always gets pushed too late?

Your wireless mics may not be broken. They may be bumping into each other.
Clunks are not always cables.

Sometimes your wireless channels need a clean scan and compatible manufacturer banks.

Your best sound crew might already be in your classroom.

They’re strong
They’re curious
They WANT to help

Start small:
Invite 2–3 students
Give them one job
Teach while you set up

Who’s a student that would LOVE this at your school?

The best sound upgrade is already in your storage closet.
Organize cables by type. Label everything. Remove broken gear. Document your setup with photos. Train a helper once — record it, reuse it forever.
Less chaos at setup = more focus on your students.

💬 What’s the most disorganized part of your sound setup right now?

Your mixer location matters more than most people think.
If you’re mixing from backstage, a rack, or a closet, you’re guessing at what the audience hears.
The best mix decisions happen where the audience is listening.
You have options: a snake, rolling rack, second mixer, tablet control, or portable system.
Where is your school mixer located right now?

If your school sound system still feels like a mystery, this summer could be the turning point.
Because next spring is coming.
The concert.
The musical.
The packed room.
The parents listening for every word their child says.
And if nothing changes, the same problems may show up again:
Feedback.
Mic dropouts.
Guessing at the mixer.
Stress during tech week.
Parents saying, “I couldn’t hear my kid.”

That does not have to be your story next year.
You probably were not taught audio systems in Music Ed.
But you can learn now.

My free checklist, book, and course were created to help elementary music and theatre teachers make real improvements right away.
And the course goes deeper.
Hear the Kids! A Teacher’s Guide to Sound System Mastery will show you how your sound system works, what the controls do, and how to prepare your system so your next show sounds great.

Buy it now, with school funding if you can, and learn sound over the summer.

The worst time to figure out your sound system is during tech week.
The best time is before the pressure is on.
Course, book, and free checklist are in the link in my bio.
