This year the winter solstice is today, December 21 at 10:27 pm EST. It represents the shortest day and the longest night of the year. It also marks the official beginning of the winter season. The winter solstice has been celebrated by various cultures throughout history, such as the Hopi celebration of Soyal, Yalda, the ancient Persion celebration and St. Lucia in Scandinavia. Ancient people looked to nature to understand the way the world worked, so the themes such as rebirth, renewal, and the return of the light are central to many celebrations, such as the lighting of the Yule log. Did you know the 12 Days of Christmas are an adaptation of the 13 Days of Solstice? Those 13 days marked the end of the year from Dec 20 to New Year, January 1. and gifts were given over the course of these days as there was not a single day designated to do so.
From now on, the days will lengthen slowly until we celebrate the summer solstice. Seems far away, doesn't it? Meanwhile, enjoy the sunlight while you can!

Our clients' horses are living large in this post and beam beauty. Stalls, tack room, feed room and washing stations for the horses' care plus a kitchenette, lounge, full bath and laundry for the grooms comfort. The thoughtful owners took care of everything. Wonder if the horses appreciate the view? We do!
