Had a call for an assessment of a deck that was " Repaired" previously by a handy man he replaced all the post and added some. While doing my assessment I noted the deck still had sway from side to side. Typical with 2nd story decks, but fixable with bracing. Then I noticed 2 post installed that had no purpose being there. While checking on the primary post I noticed one outside post was spliced at the header. Handyman had rubbed dirt on the splice to hide the seam.
So yesterday I go to replace the 1 post, remove the other 2 not needed post and add the needed bracing. Wow did I get surprised, this guy decided that structural post only needed to be in the ground 6 inches with maybe a 1/2 bag of concreteper post. So imagine being on a second story deck 10 feet off the ground and the only thing holding it up are (3) 4x4 post placed in the ground 6 inches. Needless to say we ended up adding temporary supports, digging 3 new holes for 3 new post down a minimum of 42 inches and have 15 bags of concrete to hold things in place. The boys and I stayed to 6:30 -7:00 last night we couldn't see anymore cause it was dark.
I'll post tonight the before pictures and tomorrow the after.
Oh did I mention this house is supposed to close in less than a week?
