There are more than 617,000 bridges across the United States. Over 40% of these bridges are 50 years old and of that 46% are in "poor" condition. High quality protective coating is a necessary defense against our nation's transportation assets, so that our bridges don’t end up like this!

For ships, barges, buoys, drilling platforms and other marine structures, thinking preventatively about corrosion control isn’t an option — it’s a must. There’s no doubt about it: your asset will corrode if you don’t take proactive measures like choosing the right coating or creating a comprehensive coating maintenance plan.

7000 miles away, a South Korean project site waited in need of a dedicated coating inspector. FeO answered the call and sent Bob Wolf (QP5 inspector and Protective Coating Specialist) across the Pacific to work on this daunting task. Despite language barriers, vicious weather conditions and multiple project site complications, FeO successfully upheld the QP5 standards.

What US Air Force base is on island only 2.85 square miles and located in one of the most remote places in the world? This small little atoll is home to the longest strategic runway in the Pacific Islands (3,000 meters). No one lives here (permanently) but there are about 100 personnel working on the island year around. And for the next few months, Wake Island will be the home to an AMPP-certified coating inspector from FeO. Crazy world!

Our military subjects its equipment to some of the world’s harshest environments. Their assets must be able to withstand every extreme — from the hostile desert environs of the Middle East to the turbulent sea storms of the Pacific — and still be ready to perform to standard when called upon.

corrosion refers to the damage that occurs to an asset when two different kinds of metal are joined in a corrosive environment.

When the environmental conditions are right and the metals are in electrical contact with one another, one of the metals will corrode more quickly than if it were on its own while the other will corrode much more slowly.
