More than 1,640 people are dead after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked the Asian nations of Thailand and Myanmar Friday.
More than 3,400 were injured and more than 100 remain missing.
The majority of the deaths reported so far were in Myanmar, where at least 1,600 were killed. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead in Thailand, 26 injured and 47 are still missing, according to The Associated Press. At least three buildings collapsed in Bangkok, the Thai capital.
The earthquake struck at around midday local time Friday and was quickly followed by a powerful 6.4 magnitude aftershock, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The exact extent of the damage and casualties remained unclear Saturday, especially in Myanmar. The country, one of the poorest in the world, is in the midst of a civil war and information there is tightly controlled.
“The death toll and injuries are expected to rise,” the head of Myanmar’s military government, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, said.
