James Finley was born before the Declaration of Independence and went on to help shape one of America’s earliest modern suspension-bridge systems. By the early 1800s, his chain-supported designs were already changing how engineers thought about crossing greater distances.

Different century. Same American habit of asking, “What if we built it better?”
